Liverpool are enjoying one of their best campaigns under Jurgen Klopp as they sit 13 points clear at the summit of the Premier League with a game in hand after the festive period. The Merseyside giants look set to win their first league title in three decades after arriving at the half-way mark unbeaten, and have also kicked off the defence of their Champions League crown with similar aplomb.

While some may see no reason for the Reds to dip into the transfer market this winter, the side have a good number of issues to address if they are to maintain their challenge for the Premier League title. They have already secured the signing of Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg.

In this article, we take a look at three players that Liverpool can further add to their ranks this January transfer window:

#1 Left-back: Mathieu Goncalves

Toulouse defender Mathieu Goncalves is understood to be among Liverpool's top targets as they continue their search for a suitable left-back in the January transfer window.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed impressive form since making his senior debut for Les Pitchouns against Paris Saint-Germain back in August but has largely been unable to help them stay off the relegation zone, having made only three other league appearances after that game.

Antoine Kombouare's men are currently languishing at the bottom of the French top-flight with only 12 points from 19 games this season, which means a chance to play for the reigning European champions would be even more attractive for the player.

The Frenchman will not only be the perfect back-up to Andrew Robertson, who has played most of the Reds' games this season, but he could also prove to be a long-term investment for the Merseyside giants, who have a tendency to buy young players with a high resale value.

#2 Forward: Timo Werner

RB Leipzig sensation Timo Werner could be the perfect man to supplement Jurgen Klopp's lethal attacking trio amid growing concerns over the depth in different areas of the Liverpool squad.

The 23-year-old is a proven striker whose movements around the pitch are similar to that of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. His versatitlity makes him the ideal replacement in case of injury to any of the attacking regulars, and his impressive goalscoring capabilities would provide the Reds with some healthy competition for the starting positions.

The former Stuttgart man, who has racked up 18 goals and six assists in the Bundesliga this season, is likely to command a massive fee after extending his contract with Leipzig last year but his addition would undoubtedly make the Reds squad even stronger and more enviable than it already is.

The German international, who is on the radar of Liverpool, has also been linked with fellow Premier League outfit Chelsea.

#3 Centre-back: Diego Carlos

Liverpool are reportedly in talks with Sevilla over the potential transfer of Diego Carlos to Anfield next summer.

The Merseyside giants boast of an incredible defence but a series of injuries this season have left Klopp fearing the worst as they hope to lift their first Premier League title at the end of the season.

Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip have all been injured this season, and if a crisis arises, there are hardly any options to deputise in the centre-back position.

As a result, Liverpool could look to step up their chase for Carlos, and bring him to Anfield this month. He could serve as a suitable partner to Virgil van Dijk, and could even pose as a threat during set-pieces, having scored twice in 20 appearances in all competitions this season.

The Brazilian has a £64 million release clause in his contract with Sevilla, but Liverpool need to act fast as Real Madrid are also believed to be interested in the 26-year-old as he is being viewed as an ideal long-term replacement to Sergio Ramos.
