Manchester United had a disappointing campaign last season as they finished 6th in the Premier League and missed out on the Champions League football for next season. This led to many of the big-players facing criticism for their inconsistency, poor performance and especially, their lack of passion towards the club.

However, the underperformance and lack of desire of these big-name players proved to be beneficial for the youngsters at the club as the manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, often snubbed the first team players to give a chance to some exciting raw talent.

The Manchester United boss is set to continue the same philosophy in the next season as he wants to provide the young stars at the club with a platform to showcase their mettle rather than flood the club with new signings. This will be exciting news for the youngsters as they can now step-up and make the most of this opportunity to progress further and make a name for themselves.

Here we look at 3 young players who, if given a chance, can make an impact for the Red Devils next season.

The confirmed departure of Andre Herrera and the uncertainty over the future of Paul Pogba has created a void in the midfield for Manchester United. Additionally, their holding midfielder Nemanja Matic is arguably past his prime, which worsens the situation for the Red Devils as they look to bounce back next season under Solskjaer. Nevertheless, this creates the perfect opportunity for one of their exciting young midfielders - Scott McTominay.

The Scottish midfielder was highly regarded by the ex-manager, Jose Mourinho and the player is trying to live up to those expectations. The youngster showcased glimpses of his talent and potential this season through his impressive performances against some of the top sides like Barcelona. The Scott has a vast skill set and is highly versatile.

The midfielder has excellent composure on the ball and a knack for driving forward at the opposition with the ball at his feet. He is equally strong defensively as he utilizes his tall and strong physique to recover the ball, win aerial duels and dominate the opposition in the midfield. Additionally, the player possesses strong mentality and has shown immense passion while playing for the Red Devils, something that was appreciated by the Norweigan boss.

Even though the 20-year-old still has a long way to go, he can surely utilize the chance to grow and progress in the next season.

#2 Dean Henderson

Sheffield United enjoyed a great run in the Championship this season as they finished 2nd in the league and secured promotion to the Premier League 2019/20. One of the players that caught everyone’s attention during their fine form is Manchester United loanee, Dean Henderson.

The goalkeeper has been in impressive form for the last couple of seasons during his loan spells. He has managed to gain consecutive promotions to Championship and Premier League with Shrewsbury Town and Sheffield United respectively. The English shot-stopper played a crucial role last season at Bramall Lane as he managed to keep a massive 21 clean sheets. Over the course of his impressive journey, the youngster has gone from strength to strength and is now ready to make a name for himself in the top-tier of English football.

Moreover, the current Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea, has been inconsistent and made too many mistakes, which proved to be costly in the Red Devil’s campaign last season. Also, the Spanish keeper’s contract expires at the end of the next season and there are high doubts over his future. In such a scenario, Dean Henderson surely deserves a chance to fight for the No.1 spot between the sticks at Old Trafford.

#1. Tahith Chong

Manchester United’s performance in the final third was dreadful last season. The main reason for this was the underperformance and inconsistency of the attacking players. The wingers Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard were just not up to the mark and did not turn up when the team required them to. With wingers being important to Solskjaer’ expansive style of football, some of the young attacking players at Old Trafford are ready to fill in the boots of these underperforming players.

One of them is Tahith Chong, who was given a few opportunities by the Norweigan manager at the end of the season. Despite getting minimum game-time, the player was able to turn heads by showcasing his exciting talent and potential. The youngster possesses incredible pace, flair, dribbling skills and most importantly the ability to provide quality deliveries from the flanks, something that the Red Devils lacked last season. Despite making his first team debut this year, the 19-year-old’s explosive style of football is already a hit with the fans at Old Trafford.

Chong is an exciting young talent who can grow leaps and bounds under the guidance of Solskjaer next season and can provide some important contributions to the team by coming off the bench or playing in the starting line-up.
