When we think about football records, the names of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi pop right up in our minds. Given that they have been on ridiculous record breaking runs throughout their careers, it is only natural that they should be known as the record breakers in footballing jargon.

But most of their records are pretty straight-forward, like record number of goals across various competitions, most hat-tricks in a league, most goals in a calendar year, and so on. Almost every football fan knows these records quite well.

If you want to stand out in your group, you need to know records and stats that are not common knowledge. So we have compiled a list of some peculiar records that current players like Iker Casillas, and former players like Jamie Redknapp hold. These records have even earned recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records!

If you would like to find out about even more unique GWRs held by Premier League stars, we have already made a Premier League specific list, which you can read here.

So without further ado, here are the 4 most unusual Guinness World Records held by footballers.

#1 David Seaman - Highest catch of a football

Starting out with the oldest record, we have former Arsenal and England stopper David Seaman at number 4.

Seaman, known for his acrobatic displays between the sticks, entered the Guinness World Records on 6 December 2010 when he successfully attempted to break the record of highest catch of a football at Wembley Stadium, London, UK.

He could only become the joint holder of this unique record, as rugby player Gavin Henson also achieved the same feat at the event organised by Cadbury, as part of their Spots V Stripes campaign.

As per the official record statement:

Arsenal football star David Seaman and Henson, both caught balls traveling at terminal velocity [85 mph] from a record-breaking drop of 102.5m, from the top of a crane.

We are all familiar with players who just can't stay at a club for a long time, whether it is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has played for some of the biggest European clubs, or Nicolas Anelka, who had started for 6 different clubs in the Premier League itself.

But none of these club-hopping players come even close to the Guinness World Record holder for the title of Most professional football (soccer) teams played for by an individual, Sebastian Abreu, who broke his own record this June when he signed for Club Deportivo Magallanes, the 27th club of his career.

He told the GWR, last year:

"Honestly I was never trying to break a Guinness World Records title but the record has made me very happy."

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp, whose career was blighted by a series of injuries, has broken more records off the pitch in a suit than in a football jersey.

Redknapp who regularly appears on the Sky One show - 'A League of Their Own', has attempted to break numerous records live on TV, with most of them not pertaining to the beautiful game.

But earlier this year, he did attempt a football related record when he successfully broke Theo Walcott's Highest altitude football dropped and controlled record, by setting a new number to beat by controlling the ball from a height of 38.92 m (127 ft 8 in).

He ended up with a broken wrist in his attempts, but showed determination to finally earn the certificate of honour.

Porto #1, Iker Casillas, is one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, and a player who has a trophy cabinet every footballer dreams of. Also, 3 immaculate Guinness World Record certificates can be found hanging on his walls.

But the best of his 3 records came during a TV show, and he utilised one of the very basic goalkeeping skills - punting.

He entered the record books on 9 July 2011, by setting a new record for Most football (soccer) goals punted from the halfway line in one minute in Beijing, China. It was an outdoor attempt for the TV show Zheng Da Zong Yi - Guinness World Records Special 2011.

The former Real Madrid shot-stopper managed to find the goal 11 times in a minute, directly from the midfield, and set a record that hasn't been broken yet.
