A changed Euro 2020 format gave several teams hope of doing well, and the tournament certainly didn’t disappoint. If you are a Germany national team fan though, the tournament probably left a bitter taste in your mouth.

Italy, after seeing some terrible lows in the previous regime, deservedly won their second Euro 2020 title by beating England.

Several teams punched above their weight at Euro 2020, and it came at some of the heavyweights’ expense. Germany were one of the teams who flattered to deceive at Euro 2020, although some of their players were decent if not exceptional.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at the five best players from Germany at Euro 2020.

#5 Kai Havertz

Kai Havertz ended his club season on a high by scoring the winner in the Champions League final against Manchester City. Although he was inconsistent for Chelsea, Joachim Low preferred to use him in the front three.

Havertz scored in two of the four games for Germany at Euro 2020 and was a threat with his aerial presence and movement in the attacking third.

He wasn’t spectacular, but perhaps with more experience in the coming years, he will be even more integral to the team under Hansi Flick.

#4 Mats Hummels

Germany struggled for defensive cohesiveness leading up to the Euros, so Joachim Low recalled stalwart Mats Hummels. The defender didn’t have too much time to acclimatize, as he featured in just two friendlies before the tournament began in mid-June.

The Borussia Dortmund star, at 32, was perhaps the best defender in the team despite his obvious deficiencies.

Hummels played admirably at the back, despite being recalled to the national team after a hiatus of more than two years. He didn’t start off on a bright note after scoring an own-goal against France, but other than that, he was excellent against Les Blues.

His distribution was immaculate as usual, and even though his lack of pace was clearly visible at times, he can be proud of his efforts after being recalled by Low.

#3 Robin Gosens

Robin Gosens showed flashes of his brilliance at Euro 2020, and his performance against Portugal was the pick of the lot. Joachim Low went with a 3-4-2-1 more often than not, and he wanted to use Gosens’ ability on the left flank.

The marauding wing-back was unstoppable against Portugal as he often found himself in the right areas to cause havoc in the final third.

Once again, though, consistency was lacking as Germany failed to score against France and England and limped to a draw against Hungary.

Statistically, Gosens was one of the best attacking players for Germany as he finished with two assists and one goal.

#2 Leon Goretzka

Leon Goretzka picked up an injury at the wrong time as he missed the opening two games for Germany, before returning to face Hungary and England.

Goretzka wasn’t at his best as he lacked fitness, but his impact was clearly visible. His late goal against Hungary ensured Die Mannschaft qualified for the knockout stages.

The Bayern Munich midfielder is known for his driving runs into the box, as well as his goal-scoring ability from midfield. He provided a little bit of the spark that Germany’s midfield were craving.

Low initially went with Tony Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan in midfield. While Kroos predominantly played as a recycler in midfield, Ilkay Gundogan failed to provide anything substantial.

Goretzka’s impact against Hungary was immense after he replaced Gundogan, as the German midfield had looked pretty insipid until then. Low and Germany were perhaps a bit unlucky not to have a fully fit Leon Goretzka from the onset.

#1 Joshua Kimmich

It was between Joshua Kimmich and Tony Kroos, and we have gone with the Bayern Munich star because he offered something more than just the sideways passing and recycling of the ball.

Kimmich plays as a central midfielder for Bayern Munich, but the lack of a good option for the right wing-back position forced Low to use the diminutive midfielder in that role.

Kimmich played there without any qualms, but it was clear that it wasn’t his preferred role. His pace and crossing ability was pretty useful, especially against Portugal. The 26-year old managed two assists in the tournament.

Kroos has decided to hang up his boots, so Kimmich is expected to form the core of the midfield under Hansi Flick.
