Silverware means everything in football not just for a player who has just arrived at the scene, but also for those who have been a part of this particular sport for a very long time. There are those who have their trophy cabinets filled with more than 20 titles with their club and their international sides, but there have also been great players who have never been able to put their hands around a trophy in their career.

Be it a runner-up medal or highly acclaimed individual credentials, these 5 legends of the game, who are considered by many as some of the best footballers haven't actually won the greatest prize in any competition, be it a club or international. However, with their skills and playing style, they surely have won the hearts of millions of football fans all around the world.

#5 Antonio Di Natale

Di Natale has never won a major trophy.
Di Natale has never won a major trophy.

The late-bloomer does not require any introduction, as he was one of the rising stars of Serie A in the late 2010s. His skills as a top-class striker did earn him a lot of individual credentials, but the biggest surprise here is the fact that Di Natale never reached the finals of any club tournament ever.

The only time he was seen appearing in a final was in the 2012 UEFA Euro Finals, where the Blues faced a humiliating defeat against the Spanish giants.

However, this does not change the fact that the former Udinese legend is one of the most individually decorated footballers ever to step foot on the pitch. With two golden boots and a player of the year in 2010, Di Natale was surely a player who had a lot to offer. Only if he could win a title, he'd have sealed a spot for himself among the top football players.

#4 Jermain Defoe - AFC Bournemouth

With 495 appearances, the vegan striker is about to set a milestone by becoming the 14th player to reach 500 Premier League appearances. One of the most underrated strikers in the history of the Premier League, with over 162 goals, he is the 7th highest goalscorer in Premier League history and is one of the most famous goal poachers of his generation.

At the age of 36, Defoe still doesn't stop performing, but a very little known fact is that the Englishmen has not won a major trophy ever in his career. The only thing that he has to show on his trophy cabinet is the Community Shield runner-up medal.

In 2008, however, he left Tottenham just days before their FA Cup Finals, where Spurs beat Chelsea. Pretty unfortunate for Defoe, as it could have been his first trophy!

#3 Leighton Baines - Everton

Only thing Baines misses is a good ole' trophy

Back in the mid-2000s, Baines was one of the most chased left backs in the Premier League, as offers from some of the biggest clubs including Manchester United filled his e-mail box in a flurry.

However, to everybody's surprise, the Englishmen opted for a stay at Everton and has continued to play for the Toffees since then, being a regular member of the team even at 33.

With over 410 appearances, the left-back is one of the most heavily experienced players in the League but has failed to win a major title with Everton and Wigan. With 3 runner-up spots, Baines continues to struggle at club level in terms of winning the major trophies.

However, he could still be going at the age of 33 and winning something with the Toffees. In addition, Baines has some individual credentials to his name, such as the Premier League Milestone award and the PFA Team of the year award in two seasons.

#2 Clive Allen

One of the most prolific strikers of the 1980s and 90s, Allen was the kind of player who could play at any attacking position and was considered as one of the most feared strikers of his generation.

While he is notably known for his stint with Tottenham Hotspur, with whom he was able to grab some attention, he is known to have played for seven different London-based clubs in a career that spanned for almost 16 years.

While he did score some of the most important goals for the likes of Queen's Park Rangers and was able to reach the FA Cup finals on multiple occasions, Allen, to everyone's surprise, has not won any major title with any of the big names that he has played for.

However, his skills as a goalscorer have definitely given him a name in the history books of English football.

#1 Bernd Schneider

Schneider is one of the best Leverkusen players
Schneider is one of the best Leverkusen players

The 'White Brazilian' was one of the most influential and hard working players of his generation, as he is responsible for some of the most important assists for any team that he has played for.

Schneider's tenure with Bayer Leverkusen has been something that nobody can ever forget, as with 5 runner-up spots on 3 of the biggest competitions in Europe, he is one of those passionate football players who never won a major trophy.

It is only a surprise that the 'provider of goals' was never able to put his hands on a piece of silverware, as his run in the Champions League back in 2002, where he provided more assists than any other player made us all believe in that Leverkusen was going to be taking the title home, defeating Real Madrid.

However, the German hasn't had anything more than the UEFA Champions League top assist provider award and a few runner-up medals.
