5 Most successful English clubs of all-time

Sunderland v West Bromwich Albion - Premier League

England has since the inception of time been known as the home of football. It remains one of the few countries that pioneered the development of football to the world's most popular sport that it is today. Consequently, England has been home to great football clubs since the beginning of its domestic league in 1889.

While some of these clubs have collapsed, others are still in existence, though some of them do not command the same dominance as they previously did. Here, we take a look at the most successful English teams to have ever graced the football field.

#5 Aston Villa

Aston Villa v Norwich City - Premier League

While Aston Villa may not command the same respect as they did in previous times, their superior domestic and continental records have made sure that their legacy is cemented as one of the best English football club teams ever to grace the football field.

Founded in March 1874, Aston VIlla's performances made them achieve strong dominance domestically. Aston Villa won their first domestic league in 1893/1894 and won their second and third league titles two years later in the 1895/1896 season and 1896/1897 season respectively.

Their domestic dominance continued well into early 1900s until they saw a dip in form, the remaining seasons afterward. In 1981, Villa won their seventh domestic league title and their first Community Shield title and followed those with their first European title in the 1982 season.

They also won the 1982 UEFA Super Cup trophy. During Villa's strong dominance in the domestic league, they amassed seven FA Cup titles between 1887 and 1957.

Aston Villas's impressive record domestically and internationally makes them deserve a place as one of the most successful English clubs. Their position on the all-time league table is number five with 5897 points.

#4 Everton

Everton v Watford - Premier League
Everton

Founded in 1878, Everton never saw success until early 1891, when they won their first domestic league competition. After winning their first league title, Everton's rapid growth stalled and slowed until early 1900s when it saw a repeat of their early success.

In the years that followed 1915, Everton won eight additional domestic league titles, winning their last one in 1987. In 1985, Everton tasted their first European glory when they won the European Cup Winners Cup after winning the domestic league in England.

During the time of their dominance in the domestic league, Everton also saw a repeat of their successes in the FA Cup, winning their first FA Cup in 1906 and the remaining four in 1933, 1966, 1984, and 1985 respectively. Everton replicated their successes in the FA Community Shield where they won nine trophies between 1928 and 1995.

Though they barely see the same successes as they previously did in the past, Everton's strong league performances in the league and the FA Cup have etched their name in the annals of English football.

Their position on the all-time league table is third with 6593 points.

#3 Arsenal

Arsenal was founded in 1886, but took a long time before they finally saw success. In 1930, Arsenal won their first trophy, the FA Cup. They followed that trophy with the FA Community Shield the same year and the Premier League title a year after. Winning the first three titles paved way for an impressive run of title wins in the 1990s.

In 1994, they won their second European title after the 1974 triumph in the UEFA Europa League. In early 2000, their strong domestic performance continued and it resulted in their first double win when they won both the FA Cup and Premier League in 2002.

Overall, Arsenal have won two league cups, fifteen Community Shield titles, thirteen FA Cups, thirteen Premier League titles, and two European Cups.

Their current position on the all-time league table is number two with 6645 points. Their strong performances have made them one of the greatest English football clubs of all-time.

Liverpool was founded in the 1892 season and never took long before they saw rapid success in the domestic league, winning their first title in the 1901 season. Five years later, their second Premier League title followed. Between 1922 and 1990, they won additional 16 Premier League titles bringing their total league titles to 18.

Also, they won a total of 15 FA Community Shield titles between 1964 and 2006 and also won 7 FA Cup titles between 1965 and 2006. Liverpool also won the League Cup on eight different occasions.

Even with such great domestic dominance, Liverpool struggled to find success in European competitions. After winning two Europa League titles and two Champions League titles in the 1973, 1976 and 1977, 1978 seasons respectively, Liverpool won the Champions league in 1981 and 1984 and their third Europa League title in 2001.

In 2005, Liverpool famously defeated AC Milan to win the Champions League after coming back from three goals down in the first half. Between 1977 and 2005, Liverpool saw tremendous successes in the UEFA Super Cup, winning the cup three times. After their 2005 triumph, Liverpool declined in form but their historic performances make them one of the best English football clubs ever.

Their position on the all-time league table is first with 6745 points.
