5 players Chelsea need to sign in the January transfer window

With Christian Pulisic already signed, Chelsea have made the first January move out of all the top 6 clubs. However, there is a clear issue with the Chelsea centre forward position.

With Bayern Munich circling around starlet Callum Hudson-Odoi, Chelsea must be very careful with their moves in this window. Breaking the club's transfer record for Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata has crashed and burned. The striker's 5 Premier League goals this season has left Maurizio Sarri no option but to play his biggest games with no forward at all.

There are other concerns throughout the Blues team that can be addressed in this window as they hunt for both the Europa League and a top-four finish. The team is also still competitive in the two domestic cup competitions. Let's have a look at some of the options Sarri and Chelsea can turn to in this January transfer window.

Mauro Icardi

The Argentine megastar, who was left out of their World Cup squad, is the most popular named linked to Stamford Bridge and for good reason. Icardi is probably the most desired player for the position in world football, a true number 9 that leads from the front without fear.

Because the player is so highly rated he will not come cheap and will have many other potential destinations. This is a player capable of going to the very top of the game and Chelsea might not be as an attractive football home as others.

Gonzalo Higuaín

The goalscoring extraordinaire coming to be Chelsea will be nothing more than a quick fix. At 31 years old and not having his best season in Milan and move to West London does not necessarily mean immediate success.

But Sarri who has worked with Higuain during the player's most successful goalscoring season can rejuvenate the former Real Madrid man to find his form again. Higuain's brother, his agent, has been rumoured to be in England negotiating a deal.

Elseid Hysaj

With Davide Zappacosta close to leaving Chelsea a replacement is likely. Although César Azpilicueta is the favoured right back cover, Albanian wingback Hysaj is more natural to the position and could come from Sarri's former club Napoli mirroring Jorginho's summer move. With Victor Moses still at the club, his fitness might dictate if this move is at all required in this window.

Krzysztof Piątek

The player who is currently going toe to toe with Cristiano Ronaldo in the Italian Serie A is next on the list.

The Polish international has gotten off to the best possible start in Italy and Genoa might be ready to cash in on the hype if they believe his performances are likely to dip. At just 23 years old with a great physical presence, he could be a real wildcard signing at this juncture of the season.

With not even a season in top league football under his belt this would be another roll of the dice by Chelsea. He would not be a guaranteed hit like Icardi but will come at a much cheaper price.

Callum Wilson

Having overcome two serious knee injuries, Callum Wilson is back and on fire in the Premier League. Gareth Southgate rewarded the striker on the back of his impressive performances with an England call-up and he took it with both hands scoring on his debut vs. the United States in Wembley.

It is not simply his impressive goalscoring record that has caught the eyes it's the fact that he finds a way to score in the very biggest of games. Since his arrival in the Premier League, he has scored against Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.
