Sergio Busquets has been one of the best midfielders of the last decade.

When talking about defensive midfielders, Sergio Busquets is one of the first names that come to our minds. The La Masia graduate has been a loyal servant for Barcelona for well over a decade and continues to be one of their best players on the pitch even today.

At 32, Busquets seems to be slowing down, though, and has struggled to perform at a high level in recent times. Though he continues to offer his best services to the club, it is time for Barcelona to find a suitable replacement for the long-serving midfielder.

Replacing one of the best players of this generation will not be an easy task, though. Barcelona may not find a player covering all the facets of Busquets' game. Nonetheless, there are plenty of options available for the La Liga club in this regard. Let's take a look at five of them.

5 players who could replace Sergio Busquets at Barcelona:

#5: Declan Rice (West Ham United)

Declan Rice has proved himself as one of the best defensive-minded midfielders in the Premier League.
Declan Rice has proved himself as one of the best defensive-minded midfielders in the Premier League.

Well, Declan Rice may not be the ideal successor of Sergio Busquets at the Nou Camp. But his growing reputation at West Ham United as a tough-tackling midfielder makes the Englishman a potential candidate to take over the defensive duties of Busquets.

With Miralem Pjanic set to join Barcelona next season, the onus of creating chances will fall upon him and Ivan Rakitic, leaving the third midfielder to do the dirty work in front of the backline.

Rice, 21, is already a solid deep-lying midfielder who has the technical ability to read the game and time his tackles to perfection, making him an ideal fit for Busquet's role at Barcelona in the upcoming seasons.

This season, Rice ranked fourth in the Premier League for attempted tackles (116), averaging three tackles a game and was only behind Wilfred Ndidi in terms of interceptions (77), making two of those per 90.

He also had an impressive 86% passing accuracy, which was only slightly less than that of Sergio Busquets', but Rice has time on his side and can improve his game under the right guidance.

#4: Bruno Guimaraes (Olympique Lyonnais)

In recent times, Real Madrid have beaten Barcelona to sign some of the best young talents from Brazil. Bruno Guimaraes is one of the players of that ilk whom Barcelona would not like to see going to their arch-rivals as the 22-year-old might be an ideal replacement for Sergio Busquets.

Guimaraes joined Olympique Lyonnais in the winter transfer window, rejecting an offer from Atletico Madrid mainly due to the club's sporting director Juninho. But their seventh-placed finish in Ligue 1 this season has opened up an opportunity for Barcelona to lure the player to Spain.

The midfielder captained Brazil in this year's Pre-Olympic tournament where Brazil were unbeaten in seven matches, and he was named the Player of the Tournament.

Guimaraes displayed his class in Lyon's 1-0 win over Juventus in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash, where he was solid defensively and clinical with his ball distribution.

The young Brazilian is a complete, all-round midfielder blessed with technical skill, an attacking mindset and an aggressive style. His likes to tackle opponents; he can make timely interceptions and play through balls. Gumaraes has all it takes to be a star at Barcelona after Busquets departs.

Sergio Busquets is, in all honesty, once-in-a-century kind of player, and finding a player who can be his out-and-out replacement can be a difficult proposition. If anything, though, Rennes sensation Eduardo Camavinga may prove to be an upgrade on the Spaniard.

The 17-year-old Angola-born midfielder possesses all the abilities to become one of the best pivots in world football. He displayed his composure in the Ligue 1 this season in midfield where he completed 88% of his passes while averaging 4.2 tackles a game.

As seen in the above heat-map, the player effectively patrols in front of his defenders while also making some runs into the opposition half from the left flank. Camavinga has the attributes in becoming a success at Barcelona and become the long term successor of Busquets.

#2: Marcelo Brozovic (Inter Milan)

Marcelo Brozovic has been one of the most consistent performers at Inter Milan.
Marcelo Brozovic has been one of the most consistent performers at Inter Milan.

Inter Milan have been in fine form in the Serie A this season. They have already secured Champions League qualification and will be aiming for a second-place finish on the last day of the Italian domestic season.

One of their best players during this campaign has been Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozovic, who like Busquets, does not get enough credit for his performances.

In the current scenario, the 27-year-old represents one of the best options for Barcelona to take the place of Busquets in the short term.

Brozovic has consistently posted a pass success of close to 90% during the last few seasons. He also boasts a tremendous work rate that has made him the lynchpin in Antonio Conte's current system at Inter.

At Inter, Brozovic plays alongside creative midfielders like Nicolo Barella and Christian Eriksen and thus will fit in perfectly in the current Barcelona squad.

The only aspect that might be disconcerting is his tendency to drift into the final third, which leaves his defenders with a lot of work to do.

#1: Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City)

Wilfred Ndidi is one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.

If Barcelona manage to sign Wilfred Ndidi from Leicester City, it could prove to be the signing of the decade for the Spanish outfit as the Nigerian international ticks all the boxes to succeed at the Nou Camp.

The highly-rated 23-year-old has already gained a lot of experience of playing at the top level with the Foxes and has been an integral part of their squad in the last three seasons. He passing accuracy has improved with every campaign as he finished the 2019-20 season with 85% completed passes.

One of Ndidi's biggest assets is his ability to recycle possession. He can win the ball back in his half and pass it forward to his attackers in no time. His prowess in aerial duels would also provide a much needed boost to Barcelona.

Ndidi's importance for his side can be assessed from this stat: starting from mid-January to February, he missed five of six league games due to an injury and Brendan Rodgers’ men couldn't win any of those fixtures Ndidi didn't feature in.

At 23, the Nigerian still has plenty of room to improve. To become the midfield general at Barcelona, the only aspect he probably needs to improve further is his passing accuracy.
