Manchester United need quality players in the upcoming summer to challenge for the Premier League

Manchester United are currently fighting for a place in the top 4 and they are going to play Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals in April. Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over at Old Trafford in December last year, they have looked a completely different side.

The Red Devils are playing some brilliant football, but that doesn't mean that they are not short of players in some departments. Their recent losses to Arsenal and Wolves suggest that the Premier League giants do need a couple of reinforcements.

United need at least 4 players in the summer transfer window to put up a title challenge next year and take their place amongst Europe's elite. So, without further ado, here are the 5 players the Red Devils should sign in the upcoming summer transfer window:

#5 Adrien Rabiot

Adrien Rabiot could turn out to be a bargain for the Red Devils

Manchester United need a central defensive midfielder as Nemanja Matic is already in his 30's. Rabiot is a perfect replacement for someone like Matic as the Frenchman has quite similar traits to the Serbian.

Rabiot has always played in a 3 man midfield at Paris Saint-Germain, something that Solskjaer always goes with. He can operate as the deep lying playmaker for the Red Devils and allow the likes of Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba to do the damage upfield.

The only problem with him is his attitude as shown by his rejection to play for France in the FIFA World Cup and his recently fractured relationship with PSG. Nevertheless, Rabiot is top class talent and still very young.

His contract runs out this summer and someone of Rabiot's quality on a free, could very well turn out to be a bargain for Manchester United.

#4 Toby Alderweireld

The Belgian would add the much-needed defensive boost to the squad

Manchester United need quality players at the back and they are also short on replacements as Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly have a tendency to get injured every now and then. The Red Devils have been interested in Alderweireld for quite some time now and this summer, they need to sign the Belgian.

Alderwiereld can alter the look of United's backline and his experience in the Premier League will benefit those who play around him. With his €25 million release clause, the Belgian is available for a cut price deal and someone of his quality should be snatched up by the Red Devils.

#3 Alex Grimaldo

Manchester United need a backup left-back to Luke Shaw as they don't clearly have one. Diogo Dalot or Ashley Young fill in for Shaw in his absence and both of them prefer to play at right-back. Alex Grimaldo can be a perfect backup to Shaw.

Grimaldo has been playing consistently well for Benfica and the 23-year-old Spaniard can really push Shaw to be better. Grimaldo is an attacking full back by nature and his brilliant movement in the final third can cause any defense problems. Still very young, Grimaldo can prove to be another astute signing by the Red Devils.

#2 Jadon Sancho

Manchester United do not have a natural right winger in their side as Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard have tendency to drift inside and operate through the middle. United need a quality right winger and Jadon Sancho can prove to be one. He has been absolutely brilliant for Borussia Dortmund this year.

The 18-year-old can provide Manchester United the width on the right side and can take the Red Devils attack to the next level. Just imagine an attack of Sancho, Rashford, and Martial. No defense would want to face this attack. Sancho might not come cheaply for the Red Devils, but he may be the long-term solution to Manchester United's right wing crises.

#1 Kalidou Koulibaly

As stated before, Manchester United's primary problem is lack of quality in defense and Koulibaly can prove to be just the signing that the Red Devils need. He can do what Virjil Van Djik has done at Liverpool, the Senegalese can instantly rectify United's defensive problems.

Koulibaly is one of the best defenders in the world at the moment and he can be also regarded as one of the best ball-playing center-backs in world football. He can help Manchester United keep possession in tricky areas and he could also improve players playing with him.

The Senegalese would not come cheap for the Red Devils, but he can really elevate the club to a different level.
