Heurelho Gomes in action

In the 26 years of the Premier League, a whole host of goals have been scored from the spot with a handful of penalties saved.

However, here we focus on the players who have committed the most fouls in the penalty area, resulting in the most number of penalties awarded against them. Pablo Zabaleta, James Tarkowski and Hector Bellerin are tied this season for conceding 2 penalties each so far this campaign.

Ibrahima Sanko is jointly tied fifth on the all-time list, with 9 penalties conceded during the course of his career. Here we take a look at the five players who have conceded 9 or more penalties in the Premier League history:

#5 Heurelho Gomes - 9

The 36-year old Gomes, began his career in 2002 with Brazilian club Cruzeiro and then joined PSV Eindhoven two years later and moved to the Netherlands.

After spending four great seasons in the Netherlands, Spurs came calling and Gomes signed for the club and quickly established himself as a top Premier League custodian. He is fifth on the list with the most number of penalties conceded by a player with 9 instances.

Gomes spent six seasons at Spurs and enjoyed a fruitful stint with the North London club but opted to join Watford in 2014. The 36-year-old has established himself as the club's number 1 over the past couple of seasons and has also captained then on a few occasions.

#4 Tim Howard - 9

Everton v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League

Sir Alex Ferguson signed the American goalkeeper, Tim Howard, in 2003 with the intention to replace Fabien Barthez in goal for Manchester United. After four years at United, Everton came calling and Howard went on to spend a year on loan before the move was made permanent.

During his 10 years at Merseyside, the American went on to make over 300 appearances for Everton and represented the club as their number 1 goalkeeper. In 2016, the veteran keeper decided to move back to the MLS and join the Colorado Rapids to continue his career, after spending over a decade in the Premier League.

The 38-year-old is fourth on the list of Premier League players who have conceded the most number of penalties with 9 to his name. He began his career in 1997, at the same time the MLS was created and spent 6 years developing his career before moving to England and Manchester United.

#3 Sebastien Bassong - 9

Norwich City v Manchester United - Premier League
Bassong during his time with Norwich City

Former Newcastle United, Tottenham and Norwich City central defender, Sebastien Bassong has conceded 9 penalties during his time in the English top flight. The Frenchman began his career with Metz in 2005 before moving to Newcastle in 2008. A year later he secured a move to Spurs, where he spent the following three seasons.

Norwich City signed the player in 2012 and after a five-year stint that involved a loan stint at Watford, the club didn't re-sign the player. Bassong is currently a free agent and without a club.

The central defender is a quality centre-half with excellent aerial presence and positioning. He is also a good passer of the football and the 31-year-old could be snapped up a club soon. With great experience and knowledge at the highest level of the game with a number of clubs, he can still play at the highest level.

#2 Jose Fonte - 10

Crystal Palace v West Ham United - Premier League
Fonte has had an injury-ravaged spell at West Ham so far

West Ham United's Jose Fonte is second on the list of players who have conceded the most penalties with 10 to his name. He began his career in 2002, with Sporting B in Portugal and moved to Benfica in 2006. After two seasons at the club, the Portuguese defender moved Palace for two seasons.

After two seasons with Palace, in 2010, Southampton signed the player and the Portuguese Euro winner spent seven seasons at the club before moving to West Ham at the start of the season.

A tall, strong, quick, smart central defender, Fonte is also a leader of the pack at the back and is the perfect central defender. A key asset for David Moyes this season, Fonte could help shape the defence with Reid in the Hammers back line and secure the club's status in the top flight.

#1 Ryan Shawcross - 11

Stoke City v Chelsea - Premier League
Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross

Former Manchester United and England central defender, Ryan Shawcross has plied his trade for Stoke City since 2008. The Englishman is the club's captain and longest serving player in the squad. He has conceded 11 penalties during the course of his career for the club and tops the list for the most number of penalties conceded by a player in the Premier League.

With Stoke languishing, just a point and a place off the bottom three, Shawcross's experience and composure at the back will be vital for the club. With new manager Paul Lambert, the club has to go on a run of unbeaten games to avoid the relegation battle towards the end of the campaign.

With just under half a season to go the 30-year-old central defender will have to organise his back line and secure the club's Premier League status for another season.
