69th Santosh Trophy: Punjab beat defending champions Mizoram in penalty shootout thriller

Hosts Punjab yesterday beat defending champions Mizoram in a penalty shootout thriller 10-9 in the second Semifinal of the ongoing 69th National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy at the Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana. Punjab would now face Services in the final tomorrow.

The match ended goalless after 90 minutes and went into extra-time, where Manvir Singh gave Punjab a 92nd minute lead, but Mizoram wasn't beaten yet as last seasons champions equalised through Lalbiakhlua in the 104th minute following the spadework from Laldingngheta.

With the match ending 1-1 after 120 minutes into went into a penalty shootout and there the drama would unfold as all 10 shooters scored to make it 5-5 and the game went into sudden dead and the 24th penalty brought the decision as Punjab keeper Jagroop Singh scored the shot to take Punjab into the final.

In the end 19 out of 24 penalties were scored and the two keeper, Jagroop Singh and his Mizoram counterpart saved five penalties in total with Jagroop saving the one that really mattered in the end.

After just about winning the penalty shootout, Punjab will face Services in the final tomorrow at the Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana at 2.30pm.
