Reports: Tottenham interested in signing Barcelona midfielder

FC Barcelona v Sporting CP - UEFA Champions League
Ernesto Valverde has decided to slim down his squad

What's the story?

Barcelona have just completed the incredible signing of Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, but if reports in The Sun are to be believed, the Catalan giants are prepared to lose a midfielder of their own with Portuguese star Andre Gomes reportedly agreeing a deal to join Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.

Signed amid much fanfare from Valencia last summer, the 24-year-old midfielder has struggled to make much of an impact and is on the lookout for a new club to get some regular playing time.

Andre Gomes has been strongly linked with an exit from Barcelona

After missing out on signing Ross Barkley, Mauricio Pochettino is said to be on the lookout for a creative midfielder capable of playing in a variety of positions across the centre of the pitch. With Barcelona ready to cut their losses and sell Gomes for a fee of £30-£35 million pounds, the move could actually come to fruition in the January transfer window.

Having made only 2 starts in La Liga this season, a move to the Premier League might just reinvigorate the flagging career of the talented 24-year-old.

The heart of the matter

Currently 5th in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur are desperate to make some quality signings in the January transfer window and push for a place in the top 4. Although Gomes has struggled to showcase his talents in the last few months, there is no denying his quality.

With Barcelona having spent monumental amounts of money to sign Coutinho, the likes of Rafinha and Andre Gomes might be sold to recoup some of the fees and not fall foul of UEFA's Financial Fair Play.

Author's take

With Barcelona ready to sell and Tottenham desperate to strengthen their midfield, this move looks like it could well come to fruition in the coming weeks.

Although the Portuguese star has not played much football this season, he could be just the kind of signing Tottenham need to propel themselves into the top 4.
