Arsenal have parted ways with manager Unai Emery after 18 months in charge, the club have announced on their official website. The 48-year-old came under immense scrutiny in recent weeks and his misery was compounded in the Europa League last night, as the Gunners fell to a shock 2-1 defeat at the Emirates against Eintracht Frankfurt, a result that was seen as the final nail in the coffin.

Speaking in the aftermath of his sacking, Arsenal director Josh Kroenke thanked the Spaniard for his services and wished him well for the future.

“Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”

Assistant manager Freddie Ljungberg has taken over on an interim basis, as the club continue their search for a new manager.

The likes of Mikel Arteta, Massimiliano Allegri and Nuno Espirito Santo have been mentioned as potential replacements and it remains to be seen who takes over the reins from the Spaniard.
