What’s the story?

Chelsea and Arsenal are set to renew their interest in Thomas Muller according to Daily Mirror. The English publication claims that the London clubs are keen on signing the German star who's not a favorite for Carlo Ancelotti.

Mirror also report that Chelse, along with Arsenal and Liverpool had made inquiries to sign the German during the summer transfer window. However, Bayern rebuffed all the approaches and were reluctant to hold any talks with the Premier League clubs for him.

In case you didn’t know...

Carlo Ancelotti has been preferring Thiago Alcantara over Thomas Muller more often than not this season so far. He was only a substitute in their last match - playing just 17 minutes.

The German has only played the whole 90 minutes once this season. His underwhelming performances in the 2016/17 season is reportedly the main reason why Ancelotti prefers to play Thiago over him.

The heart of the matter

Daily Mirror claim that Chelsea and Arsenal are set to reignite their interest in Thomas Muller in January. The German is reportedly unhappy at Bayern Munich as he is not getting enough game time.

Along with Liverpool, the two London sides were reportedly interested in signing him during the summer transfer window. ESPN reports claim that the Reds will also renew their interest in Muller should he become available in January.

What’s next?

Muller is under contract to Bayern Munich until the summer of 2021. It would take a huge bid for the Bundesliga champions to even consider selling him.

Chelsea and Arsenal have another 3 months to decide if they want to pursue their interest in him but it would be completely up to the player in the end.

Author’s Take

Where would Thomas Muller fit in at Chelsea? He's not fast enough to play on the wings with Hazard nor is he clinical enough to replace Alvaro Morata in the starting XI. At Arsenal too, it is a similar situation.

He is not suited for both the clubs and it would be a very bad move for the clubs and the players. It would be the best option for Muller to stay at Bayern and fight for his place.

He will not be a starter at any top club right now. He can be an impact substitute for several clubs, but just not someone who can start week in and week out.
