Reports: Chelsea edge closer to signing Serie A Duo

Brighton and Hove Albion v Chelsea - Premier League
Antonio Conte will be hoping that the deal does indeed go through

What's the rumour?

Chelsea have been on the lookout to add to their squad in the January transfer window and now latest reports in Sky Italia (via Sky Sports) claim that the Premier League giants are closing in on a €50m plus €10m in bonuses deal to sign the Roma duo of Edin Dzeko and Emerson Palmieri.

The report also adds that the Blues are ready to let Michy Batshuayi join the Serie A side on loan to help complete the proposed signing of Edin Dzeko.

In case you didn't know...

AS Roma v Atalanta BC - Serie A
Edin Dzeko has been in fine goalscoring form for Roma

One of the best strikers in Serie A at the moment, Edin Dzeko is reportedly ready to join only Chelsea should he depart Roma in the January transfer window. The Bosnian has been in good form this season. Dzeko has already grabbed 12 goals for Roma so far and could prove to be just the kind of striker Conte needs at Chelsea.

Also, Dzeko had a fairly successful spell at Manchester City and he will not need much time to get adjusted to the Premier League's style of play once again.

The heart of the matter

With Morata not firing on all cylinders and Conte not using Batshuayi regularly, Dzeko's potential arrival will certainly add some welcome depth and quality to the striking department. Emerson Palmieri, on the other hand, is a highly rated young left-back and his arrival will allow Chelsea to loan out or sell the likes of Kenedy and Baba Rahman.

Also, with Dzeko now 31, Roma are not averse to cashing in on their premier goalscorer and the move might very well come to fruition in the January transfer window.

Rumour rating/probability

8/10

The Edin Dzeko to Chelsea rumour has been gaining pace and with Chelsea in obvious need of reinforcements, the deal might very well go through in the coming days. Also, although Sky Sports have lost their famed reliability in the last few years, they are still a more trustworthy source than most of the other publications and Chelsea fans can be quietly optimistic about this deal.

Author's take

Although Dzeko is on the wrong side of 30, his obvious quality, experience, and physicality will certainly be an asset to Chelsea. An excellent target man and capable of bullying the defenders, Dzeko's potential arrival to Stamford Bridge could prove to be one of the most intelligent moves of the January transfer window.
