What's the news?

Lionel Messi is like red wine. He seems to be getting better with age. Last night he broke the record of scoring in the most number of Copa del Rey finals even though Barcelona lost the match.

In case you didn't know...

The La Liga 2018-19 champions have a last leg of the season to forget. The 4-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semis this month has demoralised the team completely. The team stumbled to a 1-2 loss against Valencia last night to add salt to the wounds of Lionel Messi and his colleagues.

However, for the Argentine magician, it has been records galore this week. He has already equalled the record of legendary Telmo Zarra of being the top scorer in La Liga in six different seasons. If everything goes right, he'll be creating a new record next season. On a personal note, he has had a brilliant season having scored 51 goals and assisted 22 more for Barcelona making the undisputed best attacker in the planet. He won the Creu de Sant Jordi awards, one of the highest civilian awards in Catalonia last week. He won the 6th Golden Boot which is another record and the third time in a row.

The heart of the matter

Lionel Messi has now scored in 6 finals of the Copa del Rey, the Spanish domestic cup competition.

He has now scored 51 goals in the prestigious cup competition, 2 ahead of Ferenc Puskas and 30 behind legendary Telmo Zarra who sits at the top of charts with 81 goals. He's sure to move further up the charts with Guillermo Gorrostiza, Quini and Edmundo Suarez in touching distance from his tally.

What's next?

The Argentine will now be heading to Brazil and will be leading Argentina in the Copa America 2019. Barcelona will now have to introspect in the summer and work accordingly to come back stronger next season.
