Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes that the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'will only continue to grow' should the Norwegian fail to overturn their poor form.
The Red Devils have had a nightmare start to the new Premier League campaign having won just three out of a possible nine points in the season so far.
In this period, they've conceded eleven goals — nearly a third of what they did all season last year — including a shambolic 6-1 defeat at the hands of Jose Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur.
This poor form has led to speculation surrounding Solskjaer's future at the club, and with a coach such as Mauricio Pochettino available, the former Manchester United striker could be on the brink of losing his job.
Berbatov brands Pochettino 'one of the finest in the world' amidst Manchester United speculation
Speaking to Betfair about Manchester United's managerial situation, former Red Devil Berbatov expressed;
"Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken some criticism recently, I can understand why the odds say he is the most likely manager to leave his post, especially if they continue down this road. The pressure on him will only continue to grow, and if they continue to fail to win points, the point will likely come where action is taken. I believe he is still fine for the job personally, and we will have to see."
The former Bulgarian striker then went on to heap praise on Mauricio Pochettino, who he considers to be one of the best coaches in the world.
Berbatov continued,
"To me, it is amazing that Mauricio Pochettino is available for this [Manchester United] job, one of football's finest coaches in my opinion. You can say maybe he waited for this job, but that is very risky for a manager to do, and I cannot believe another club hasn't snapped him up."
The former Manchester United forward explained that while the Argentine could be the right choice for the job, there have been many men in the past who came with enormous reputations but could not succeed at Old Trafford. He explained,
"Pochettino may be 'the man', but at some stage, they were all 'the man' - [David] Moyes, [Louis] van Gaal, [Jose] Mourinho, all were the next saviour at one stage. For United fans, I would say that every single person connected to the team in any way are all suffering."
Berbatov still remains optimistic of the 'glory days' returning to Manchester United despite the problems faced by the club in recent seasons. Ending on a positive note, the 39-year-old remarked,
"The ones that will express their feelings the loudest will be the fans, and I can understand this. United are led by people who want success for the club, and the glory days will return, of that there is no doubt - just when that is, is the question."
Manchester United are set to return to action with a trip to St. James' Park after the international break. Star striker Anthony Martial is set to remain sidelined after he received a straight red card during Manchester United's 6-1 thrashing against Tottenham Hotspur.
