FA Cup 2017/18: Huddersfield 0-2 Manchester United, Player Ratings

Manchester U
Manchester United are through to the next round of the FA Cup.Jose Mourinho's side are through to the next round of the FA Cup thanks to two goals from Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku.

Although the Red Devils had less of the ball, especially in the first half, their tight defence and ruthlessness and efficiency going forward was deserving of seeing them through.

Huddersfield were a spirited side this evening but their inability to find a clear pass and shooting opportunity in the final third was what cost them the game.

Here's how the players fared:

Huddersfield

Jonas Lossl - 6/10

Didn't have anything to do in the first half but pick up the ball from the back of the net and boy did he do that well. Same thing in the second half and the way he got the ball was exquisite.

Terence Kongolo - 6.5/10

Seemed to be pumped up for this fixture and did well going forward in the first half but was outplayed on occasions and was taken off in the second.

Christopher Schindler - 7.5/10

Was a rock at the back everytime Manchester United came forward with seven clearances and three each of tackles, blocks and interceptions.

Zanka - 6/10

Couldn't keep up with his partner's performance besides him but did a few things right when Romelu Lukaku had the ball.

Florent Hadergjonaj - 6.5/10

Much like Kongolo, Florent Hadergjonaj tried to get forward as much as possible in the first half and kept an-usually-electric Alexis Sanchez quite for the most part.

Philip Billing - 8/10

Easily the best defensive midfielder on display tonight, Philip Billing was doing everything right in attack and defence and gave his side the platform to express themselves in the final third.

Danny Williams - 7/10

Dribbled with the ball especially well completing 75% of them and made the right passes, too. But was often caught in possession and lacked the discipline to stay back while his side pushed forward.

Rajiv Van La Parra - 6/10

Did well in the first half constantly going up against Ashley Young but dropped off in the second half and it greatly affected the way his side attacked.

Thomas Ince - 6/10

Much like Van La Parra, Thomas Ince began the game on the front foot and took the challenge to Manchester United but didn't seem to see it through the whole game sadly.

Colin Quaner - 6.5/10

Put some lovely crosses into the box all game and did his defensive duties well, too, but couldn't create any key chance and failed to provide that spark in the final third.

Steve Mounie - 6.5/10

A very underwhelming performance from Steve Mounie. Never quite got into the game and never took the chances he had with any intent.

Substitutes

Tommy Smith - 6/10

Came on to provide more width in the second half but it never quite worked out with United sitting deeper.

Scott Malone - 6.5/10

Replaced Kongolo to be a more attacking threat for his side but barring a few crosses, failed to trouble the United defence.

Abdelhamid Sabiri - 6/10

Came on too late in the game to have any impact.

T

Romelu Lukaku took his chances exceptionally well.

Manchester United

Sergio Romera - 6.5/10

Certainly the busier goalkeeper off the two tonight but did what he had to do with a calm composure. Some of his kicks were ridiculously wayward, almost comical, really.

Luke Shaw - 7/10

Far from the kind of player he was whilst at Southampton but is slowly getting his pace and his timing back. Very useful minutes under his belt tonight.

Victor Lindelof - 7/10

Not the cool cucumber you want in the heart of your defence but did his job when called into it. Strong and worked well to thwart any danger ahead of him.

Chris Smalling - 7.5/10

A good display from Chris Smalling tonight, unlike some of his recent performances. His leadership quality at the back is key to United defending well.

Ashley Young - 7/10

Seems to have dropped off a little in terms of his performances from earlier in the year but still solid both in defence and in attack.

Nemanja Matic - 7.5/10

Had lesser strain on his passing and positioning given his midfield partner but did well in the middle stealing the ball and earning free kicks. Looks comfortable with another sitter beside him.

Michael Carrick - 7.5/10

Great to see him start a game for United again and proved why he's still one of their most important players with accurate passes and safe plays.

Scott McTominay - 7/10

Made a few errors in the game but you want these youngsters to make those kinds of errors: it only broods them for the future. Seems like a decent lad in the making.

Alexis Sanchez - 7/10

Invisible the first half. Invisible the second half - barring that sweet, sweet assist.

Juan Mata - 7.5/10

His goal was so close, it's incredible he didn't get the benefit of the doubt but nonetheless, put in another Mata-esque performance of skill, consistency and class.

Romelu Lukaku - 8.5/10

Had two chances created for him, took them both with aplomb. A proper out-and-out striker who's strong, fast and a good finisher. He can only get better.

Substitutes

Anthony Martial - 6.5/10

Came on for Sanchez in the second half and didn't really contribute much to his side's performance.

Jesse Lingard - 6.5/10

Didn't have much time for him to do what he does best: disrupt.

Eric Bailly - NA/10

Back from his injury and did well for those few seconds screaming and shouting and pointing his finger. Top draw.
