It may seem like £100m is a lot to spend when you first start selecting players for your team, but it soon winds down to almost nothing, leaving you strapped for cash and desperate for the stars that you now can’t afford.

There's no need to fret, though, as, in this article, we’ll share with you five players that are both affordable and basically guaranteed to boost your points total each week.

It’s all very well splashing chunks of cash on the popular names in the Premier League, but as any experienced Fantasy Premier League manager will tell you, the real points come from the hidden gems that you can sign for chump change and watch as they pick up points like there's no tomorrow.

Without any further ado, here are five cheap players you should have in your Fantasy Premier League team.

#5 Fikayo Tomori (Chelsea) - £4.7m

Fikayo Tomori

Fikayo Tomori is a 21-year-old centre-back with a very promising future ahead of him. His loan spell at Derby County last season will have undoubtedly augmented his relationship with boss Frank Lampard, who also arrived at Chelsea in the summer from Derby, and the pair’s chemistry is on show for everyone this season.

Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban means that they’ve had to make the most of what they’ve got. Thankfully, what they’ve got is a side bursting at the brim with talent, offering a wide range of positions, ages and traits for Lampard to choose from.

So, the transfer ban isn’t quite as dramatic as it sounds for the Blues. It, at last, gives the fans at Stamford Bridge a chance to see the young talents that have been putting in the work behind closed doors, or out on loan with other clubs, and they must be delighted by what they’ve seen so far.

Tomori is just one of many players who have been given that chance and flourished, and you can expect to see the defender play in most of Chelsea’s matches this season, which makes him a solid pick for an FPL‌ side.

Tomori costs just £4.7m and has bagged 19 points so far this season so he is certainly one to keep an eye on.

#4 Todd Cantwell (Norwich) - £4.9m

Todd Cantwell is a 21-year-old midfielder who has cemented his spot in Norwich’s first team over the past couple of seasons, coming to the fore as the Canaries rocketed up the Championship table to eventual automatic promotion.

Cantwell was dubbed as the one to watch out for by many pundits before this Premier League campaign began and it’s clear to see why. He’s already scored twice and created two assists in eight games thus far. He doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, either.

As a result of his solid performances so far this season, Cantwell has earned 33 points in total. This tops many other players in his position and for just £4.9m, you'll save a considerable amount if you sign him rather than the more popular players who don't necessarily accumulate more points.

Even if you don't feel like you can incorporate him into your starting eleven just yet, Cantwell still makes for a very strong substitute, which is a role often overlooked in the FPL.

#3 Mason Mount (Chelsea) - £6.8m

Mason Mount

Another Chelsea player to make this list is Mason Mount. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder was also with Tomori at Derby County under Frank Lampard, which is why the manager is probably so comfortable with picking him for the first team.

But these appearances haven’t been kept up for no reason; Mount’s performances for the Blues have been integral to their recent success, and you can see how they’d struggle without him.

In eight games, Mount has bagged four goals and created an assist in the process. This kind of goal tally for an attacking midfielder has become increasingly rare in the modern world of football, which makes the fact that a 20-year-old has managed it all the more impressive.

Mason Mount costs £6.8m in FPL, which is slightly more expensive than the previous two names on this list, but outfield players are naturally priced higher. He’s collected 46 points already this campaign and could be set for a great deal more if he stays fit.

#2 John Lundstram (Sheffield United) - £4.5m

John Lundstram has surprised virtually everybody with how well he’s adjusted to life in the Premier League. The 25-year-old was relatively unknown before Sheffield United were promoted, but his consistently solid performances have catapulted him into the spotlight at last.

Lundstram has featured in all of Sheffield’s Premier League games so far this season, registering two goals and an assist in that time. For a central midfielder listed as a defender on FPL, these stats are impressive.

His FPL‌ price tag of £4.5m has naturally drawn a lot of attention from managers either looking for a cheap option in the backline or a player to reinforce the substitutes bench.

Lundstram is exactly the sort of cost-effective player you need in Fantasy Premier League if you want to save money to allocate for the rest of your team. £4.5m is just £0.5m higher than the lowest you can possibly pay for a defender, so it’s an absolute bargain.

#1 Joel Matip (Liverpool) - £5.5m

Joel Matip is the type of player who puts in a great shift almost every game but is still overlooked by the majority because of his headline-grabbing teammates.

This is understandable given that he’s in a side with the likes of Sadio Mane and Mo Salah. Even more sympathy could be expressed when you realize that one of the main players in the squad is Virgil van Dijk, who plays right beside the Cameroonian, casting a shadow over him both metaphorically and literally.

However, with that said, Matip’s performances for the Reds have been consistently solid since the season began, and the 30 points he’s accumulated thus far is a respectable amount and one which most managers would be content with.

Considering that Matip is £1.0m cheaper than Van Dijk and collects around the same amount of points as the Dutchman, who’s currently only three points ahead, you haven’t got much to lose by putting your faith in him.
