Fantasy Premier League: 5 key areas and players to avoid in September

AFC Wimbledon v West Ham United - Carabao Cup Second Round
AFC Wimbledon v West Ham United - Carabao Cup Second Round

The international break has given the FPL managers a chance to take a breather and assess their options going forward. Some might be keen to use a wildcard in this time to bring in some important players that they might have missed. While others may be happy with their overall squad having predicted correctly the performing players in the first month of the season.

It is imperative to look at the upcoming fixtures list when deciding upon one's transfer strategy in the FPL. A good run of matches can overturn a team's fortunes who have recently been in a bad run of form and also mellow down the returns of teams that have been performing well.

There are some areas that pop up as clear Fantasy no-nos for the coming month. We discuss 5 of the most key and probable ones in this list.

Here are the 5 areas to avoid in September

#5 West Ham's defense

West Ham sit at the bottom of the table, after having a torrid start to the season losing 4 in 4. This has been disappointing for a lot of FPL players, as the Hammers were one of the teams to watch going into the season due to their exciting transfer dealings as well as the arrival of Premier League winner Manuel Pellegrini.

West Ham have been rueful at the back so far having already conceded 10 goals and keeping no clean sheets. The only player to have got a decent return of points is Marko Arnautovic (17), but he too has looked far from his best. The defence has looked unsettled and big hitters such as Liverpool and Arsenal have punished them dearly for their mistakes.

Things do not look any better going into the next few games either as they play Everton away, before hosting Chelsea and Man United at home. It is hard to see the club get too many points from these games and even harder is them keeping any clean sheets.

Stay away from West Ham's defense for the time being, including Lukas Fabianski who is currently one of the most popular goalkeepers in the FPL.

#4 Man City's midfield

Manchester City v Newcastle United - Premier League
Mendy and Aguero currently carry the points assurance in the City side

City have started the season well suffering a minor setback of not winning against Wolverhampton. City player have given points aplenty especially Mendy and Sergio Agueo but their midfield remains a puzzle too tough to crack at the moment.

In the beginning of the season, Bernardo Silva seemed a good option having scored on the opening weekend but since has seen lesser minutes each passing game. New signing Mahrez is yet to give an attacking return. Leroy Sane has not even started a game yet and Sterling at the time is out injured.

With De Bruyne out for a couple of months, only David Silva looks assured of a starting place in the side, but with Pep's rotation policy nothing is certain. City do have a set of alluring fixtures coming up and one might be tempted to take a risk on one of these options, but it may very well backfire.

Time might call to wait and watch as City's midfield continues to take shape this season.

#3 Newcastle United players

Newcastle United v Chelsea FC - Premier League
The highest points getter from Newcastle currently is Joselu with only 15.

Another team who hasn't had the best of starts has been Newcastle United. You can excuse them for facing a pretty difficult run of opening fixtures though. The team as a whole has impressed at times but their points giving capacity remains a question mark for at least another month or so.

Newcastle face Arsenal and Leicester at home, while playing away to Crystal Palace and Man Utd. Their fixture list eases up after this, but until it does keeping away from their players is probably in the best interest of Fantasy players.

The player prices continue to fall in the team and they might give really good 'under the radar' budget deal later in the season. Keep an eye on the best performing Newcastle players but resist bringing them in right now.

#2 Cardiff's defense

Cardiff City v Arsenal FC - Premier League
Arsenal finally gave Cardiff a reality check this season

Yes we know that the Cardiff's defense especially goal keeper Etheridge bagged a lot of points in the opening three fixtures. But that golden period ended with a drastic change in the difficulty of their opponents.

Starting with Arsenal, we saw how the team shipped in three goals in the match. Things don't look as if they'll be any better in the upcoming games against Chelsea and Man City. Games against Spurs and Liverpool too are very close by.

Instead banking upon certain budget players from their midfield or forward line might be the better option right now. Danny Ward who is only £4.5, listed in midfield, played as a striker against Arsenal and bagged a goal. Meanwhile, steer clear of their back line for the time being.

#1 Burnley's Forward line

Burnley v Olympiakos - UEFA Europa League Qualifing Play-Off: Second Leg
Burnley have had their hands full with the Europa
league
qualification

Not many people need to reminded of this but Burnley's list of strikers is currently one of the most unpredictable prospect in the FPL. The four bulking centre forwards in the team have very little in quality over each other and the opening month has given us hardly any clue to prove otherwise.

Chris Wood has been the preferred choice in the League so far but is yet to score. Ashley Barnes was preferred in Europe before Burnley were knocked out. The team now has time to settle and get back a bit of stability back into their side.

The team which impressed so much last season has only a draw and 3 goals to their name so far. Burnley might give a good potential for points later on in the season, but for now it would be better to sit out and wait for the team and especially the strikers to really get going.
