This season has been a showcase of thrills and spills for Premier League managers

The Premier League is regarded as the most interesting European football league for a reason. From its rash challenges to its never-ending drama, the league has never disappointed. It's a league in which dreams are made but equally, dreams are shattered. The prestigious league can either make or break careers, and this season, it has had its fair share of tears.

There seems to be a managerial curse this season. Although there hasn't been as many sackings as there perhaps should have been, certain managers aren't living up to their expectations. Fans are growing frustrated and the players seem to have lost their heads.

That said, here are four Premier League managers that have underperformed this season...

#4 Quique Sanchez Flores (Watford)

It goes without saying that Watford have not been the club they were last season. A look at the Premier League will tell you all you need to know about their season so far, it's been lacklustre.

They have just one win this season, coming just before the international break. Many thought this was a sign of better things to come and it may well be. However, serious improvements must be made from their recent performance against Burnley at home. They lost by a scoreline of 0-3 and didn't take charge at any point in the game.

Sanchez Flores was brought back to the helm of Vicarage Road after a three-year gap from the club and it has not panned out the way he would have liked. His first game in charge saw him come back from two goals down to draw with Arsenal but it was soon followed by an astonishing 8-0 loss to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

Quique Sanchez Flores was put in a difficult position but the board couldn't see any better solution at the time of his appointment. He has put in a good effort to return his former club back to how they were playing last season but it just isn't working out.

He needs a change of defensive philosophy and to spark some life into the Hornets attack. They have been lacklustre to watch going forward, with Gerard Deulofeu carrying them going forward.

#3 Unai Emery (Arsenal)

The general consensus around the Arsenal fanbase is that Unai Emery should be replaced. Since he has taken over from Arsene Wenger, there has been little to no signs of progress and in fact, the club is on a downwards trajectory.

Emery didn't set the world alight in his first season in charge but he did reach the final of the Europa League so understandably he was given a second chance by the board. This season, it doesn't look likely the Gunners will progress that far under his guidance.

Emery tends to make the wrong decisions by leaving pivotal members of the squad out of the starting XI or simply playing them out of position. Mesut Ozil is an example of a player to have been unfairly abandoned and Lucas Torreira is playing as an attacking, creative midfielder which is certainly not his role. Long story short, Arsenal should be looking at their alternatives.

#2 Manuel Pellegrini (West Ham United)

Manuel Pellegrini has gone from hero to zero.

Manuel Pellegrini arrived in London in 2018 with a big reputation on his hands. Having won the Premier League with Manchester City in the past, he has all the know-how required to lead a club like West Ham to the glory they deserve.

The Hammers had shown they have what it takes to be in the top half of the Premier League, even challenging for a Europa League spot, at the start of the season. Those would have been the goals that the fans had in mind this season or at the very least, an improvement on last season when they finished tenth.

Currently, West Ham sit in 17th position, just three points above the drop-off zone. Given the money invested in summer, with the acquisitions of Sebastien Haller and Pablo Fornals, they should really be doing better. Manuel Pellegrini will know this and he'll know he's capable of better, perhaps him and West Ham United are simply a mismatch.

#1 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Manchester United)

Any manager that comes into the coaching role at Manchester United is bound to be on the receiving end of scrutiny. Sir Alex Ferguson is arguably the best manager in history and since then, it has been a case of the club trying to stay afloat until they find a real replacement for the Scotsman.

Unfortunately for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he is not the right man to replace his former boss. He has tried his hardest but despite a positive start to life in the Old Trafford dugout, this season has not been the one for Solskjaer.

Manchester United find themselves in ninth place in the Premier League and they'll only continue to fall if results don't go their way.

Solskjaer was an unbelievable player but, unfortunately for him, that's all the Old Trafford faithful will accredit him for.
