Captaincy continues to major conundrum this season as Raheem Sterling once again disappointed his backers with a blank against Southampton, a team that had just conceded nine the previous game week.

With the top two teams in the league, Manchester City and Liverpool squaring off against each other this weekend, most of us will have three or four players involved in that fixture alone and it is probably sensible to look somewhere else for captaincy picks this week, with any of the three below mentioned players great candidates.

A special mention must go out to John Lundstram, whose 21 point haul rescued countless FPL players across the globe and managers will be tempted to play the out of position defender every week now, irrespective of the fixture.

3 Players to pick for Gameweek 12

1. Raul Jimenez (AVL)

Arsenal FC v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Premier League

After a great debut season, Raul Jimenez started this season slowly with just 24 points in his first seven matches but has notched 30 in his last four games. Over the last four gameweeks, only Gabriel Jesus (14) and Neal Maupay (19) have attempted more shots amongst forwards than the Mexican’s 13 and only Jamie Vardy (five) has scored more goals than his two.

His total of three ‘big chances’ created is highest amongst forwards as well. He created a total of six chances, with only Marcus Rashford and Roberto Firmino (both seven) creating more. Wolverhampton Wanderers have scored 14 goals this season, landing 37 shots on target (SoT) and creating 21 ‘big chances’.

Aston Villa are yet to keep a clean sheet away from home this season and have conceded 11 goals in five matches on the road. They have allowed opponents more shots (121) than any other team in the league on their travels.

2. Jamie Vardy (ARS)

Jamie Vardy continued his blistering form with a goal against Crystal Palace in gameweek 11 and the Foxes striker is a great pick for captaincy this week, with Liverpool and Manchester City facing each other. The top-scoring player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with 70 points, the 32-year-old is the league’s leading scorer with 10 goals.

Only Teemu Pukki (16), Mohamed Salah (17) and Tammy Abraham (19) have landed more shots on target this season than Vardy’s 14 and he is also fifth for ‘big chances’ with 10. Only Manchester City (34) have scored more goals than Leicester City’s 27 this season and the Foxes are ranked fifth for shots with 151.

Arsenal have conceded seven goals in their five away games, keeping just one clean sheet. They allowed opponents 89 shots on the road, the sixth-worst in the league. Given all the negativity around Arsenal, it’s a great time to play the Gunners and Vardy should be a part of your squad.

3. Tammy Abraham (CRY)

The most owned asset in FPL, Tammy Abraham continued his rise with a goal and assist against Watford. No player has landed more SoT across the league than Abraham’s 19 and only Vardy (10) has scored more goals than his nine. He also leads the league for ‘big chances’ with 14.

Only Liverpool (187) and Manchester City (240) have taken more shots than Chelsea’s 181 this season and the Blues are second only to the Cityzens for ‘big chances’ with 36. Palace have conceded nine goals on their travels, keeping zero clean sheets. They allowed opponents 49 shots in the box (SiB), only eight teams fared worse.

3 Players to drop for Gameweek 12

1. Callum Wilson (NEW)

Watford FC v AFC Bournemouth - Premier League

After registering consecutive attacking returns for the first seven gameweeks, Callum Wilson has accumulated a total of just six points in the last four matches as the Cherries’ seem to have adopted a more defensive approach. They have scored just one goal in the last four matches, the lowest in the league since achieving promotion in 2015.

Only five teams attempted fewer SiB than their 25 over this period and only five teams fashioned fewer ‘big chances’ than their seven. Wilson himself has attempted just five shots in the last four matches, over 20 forwards have attempted more. The Cherries man does not merit a place in your squad anymore based on these numbers.

2. Andriy Yarmolenko (BUR)

West Ham United v Crystal Palace - Premier League

Andriy Yarmolenko was substituted at half-time in their last game against Newcastle, a worrying sign for an FPL manager given that his team needed to score goals to get back into the contest. Like Bournemouth, West Ham’s form has tailed off after a strong start to the season.

The Hammers have scored just four goals in their last four matches, creating just seven ‘big chances’ and attempting a meagre 45 shots. They now embark on a difficult run of fixtures that sees them play Burnley, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Wolves and their predicament is not likely to get any better. With many other midfield options doing the business, it makes sense to sell the Ukranian international.

3. Wesley Moraes (WOL)

Walsall v Aston Villa - Pre-Season Friendly

Wesley enjoyed a decent start to the campaign with four goals and an assist in the first eight matches but has failed to score in the last three. He has taken only three shots in total across those matches only one of which was a ‘big chance’ and more than 20 forwards registered more attempts than the Brazilian.

The Villans now play Wolves, Manchester United and Chelsea in their next three away games and the prospects of further attacking returns for Wesley look bleak. A switch to Diogo Jota of Wolves could be profitable given the kind fixtures upcoming for Wolves and similar price points.
