Churchill Brothers SC scored a 4-0 win against Goa Velha in their round 9 clash of the Goa Pro League match played at the Duler ground in Mapusa on Tuesday afternoon. With this victory the Red Machines have remained undefeated in the League so far and top the table with 23 points after the first-leg.

Churchill Brothers SC started the match with many first team regulars rested with the I-League starting over the weekend, but this didn’t seem to have any effect in the first half as they dominated with good possession football. As early as 7th minute, Alesh Sawant showed his class by taking a long range shot which was desperately kept out by the Goa Velha goalkeeper Soma Korgaokar. Then Anthony Barbosa shot just wide from the right in the 12th minute before Churchill Brothers held possession with some threatening moves till the 20th minute, but the Red Machines were unable to find the goal.

At the other end, during the 15th to 20th minute Goa Velha made three good moves into the Churchill half but were unable to reap any benefits and thereafter Churchill Brothers came back strongly and scored two quick goals. First, Balwant Singh returning after a long injury lay-off scored in the 31st minute from a well-timed header off a Saran Singh free-kick from the right and then Jaison Vales who has been a regular scorer for Churchill Brothers once again found the net in the 33rd minute when he received a ball from Balwant, lost his footing but quickly regained his balance and lobbed it home over the goalkeeper. At half-time the score read 2-0 in favour of Churchill Brothers.

In the second half, the Red Machines domination increased even further with the Goa Velha players tiring down. Hardworking Saran Singh, the Churchill Brothers left-back, made it 3-0 in favour of the team from Varca in the 50th minute, when he curled the ball into the top right hand corner of the Goa Velha goal, Jaison Vales had laid off the ball to him. Lenny Rodrigues came in following national team duty when he replaced Bikramjit Singh in the 56th minute.

19-year-old Alesh Sawant, who is having a brilliant run in the Goa Pro League, scored a wonderfully crafted goal in the 63rd minute when this youngster from Mapusa cut the ball with the outside of his left foot in a one on one situation with the Goa Velha goalkeeper and foxed him with a cool finish.

Towards the end, Goa Velha’s Roydon took a cracking shot which was well saved by the Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Lalit Thapa, who didn’t have to do too much in the match.

It ended 4-0 in favour of Churchill Brothers SC.
