Jerry Boima Karpeh was back to his scoring ways, as he netted a second-half brace to help Sporting Clube de Goa overcome Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim 4-1 in the Goa Pro League at the Duler ground in Mapusa on Monday afternoon.

Striker Dawson Fernandes was back in the starting line-up after completing his 2013 SAFF Championship duty with the Indian national team recently.

Sporting Goa custodian Melroy Fernandes was the hero after saving a penalty at a crucial point in the second half and also denying former Sporting Goa legend Wilton Gomes to score on two separate occasions.

Sporting Goa raced into the lead after just 13 minutes when defender Deepak Devrani headed in unmarked at the back post from a Dawson corner. Ten minutes into the second session, Pratesh Shirodkar laid the ball off for Jerry who applied a deft finish to score.

Cavelossim’s answer was immediate, as Agnelo D’Souza managed to catch the Sporting Goa goalkeeper off guard with a delightful shot to pull a goal back. This spurred Cavelossim on and two minutes later they were awarded a dubious penalty after the ball was adjudged to have been handled by Keenan Almeida.

Up-stepped Prestly Colaco for Cavelossim but his thunderous effort was palmed away to safety by Sporting Goa’s Melroy. The Flaming Oranje started to build-up momentum again and were rewarded for their efforts when Jerry slotted home his tenth goal of the campaign. Deep into injury time substitute Stephen Barretto scored after a mistake at the Cavelossim back to seal victory for Sporting Goa.

Sporting Goa have now collected 19 points from eight matches and are just a point behind leaders Churchill Brothers SC, while Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim stay on nine points.
