After more than a year Englishman Trevor James Morgan is back in Indian football as he has been appointed the assistant coach of the Indian Super League’s Kerala franchise, Kerala Blasters FC.

Morgan had an offer to coach in Kenya but the former East Bengal tactician chose to join the ISL bandwagon and on Wednesday after the end of domestic players draft he explained the reason behind his decision.

“I was just about to sign with the Kenyan club but I got a text message from the Kerala franchise. Being familiar with Indian football I was really happy to commit to the ISL. I had a good time at East Bengal and it is nice to look back but life moves on so I am looking ahead to this new venture,” he stated.

Morgan guided the franchise in selecting the players on both days of the draft picks so it wasn’t a surprise to see six of his former East Bengal players in the 14-man list of Kerala Blasters.

“I know these players very well. It will be good to work with familiar players because I know what I will get from them and they know what to expect from me. We will possibly get only six weeks to prepare for the tournament but that’s about the same time I got when I first arrived at East Bengal.

“I have also worked with some of the boys during the IMG-R camp last year. So I am looking forward to working with them again and now we also need to find the right foreigners,” he explained.

The 57-year-old also talked about the impact the ISL could have on the future of Indian football.

“People will watch things that entertain them so it is up to us to give the fans what they want. I believe if you have watched someone only on television and heard things about them, you would want to see them in action at the ground. That is what the fans will get from international players.

“Only time will tell how much the ISL improves Indian football but everybody involved with it aims to see football progress. It will give the youngsters a platform and maybe this generation won’t benefit too much but the next generation will,” he concluded.
