La Liga 2018-19: The unwanted records set by Real Madrid

Real Madrid CF v FC Barcelona - La Liga

Real Madrid C.F had an abysmal season, be it in the Champions League or in La Liga. The Spanish giants ended their domestic campaign with a loss to Real Betis last weekend. Owing to their poor form, Los Blancos set some unwanted records that they would not be proud of and would want to forget them. Some of these records they set in La Liga are stated below:

Record distance behind Barcelona

Madrid finished 19 points behind FC Barcelona in La Liga, the record points gap between the two eternal rivals. Los Blancos may have been a force to reckon in the UEFA Champions League in recent years, but the Catalan giants have been the undisputed kings of La Liga as they have limited the Madrid-based side to just two league titles since 2008 . Real Madrid's 2-0 defeat to Real Betis in the final game week of the season turned out to be their 12th loss in the league which saw them finish 19 points behind champions Barcelona..

Consecutive La Liga losses for Zidane for the first time

Zinedine Zidane was re-appointment as Real Madrid boss in March, with Santiago Solari and Julen Lopetegui failing to live up to the expectations. However, neither results nor performances improved since the Frenchman returned to the Bernabéu dugout. Since his arrival, Zidane lost four out of the 11 league games he managed, and Sunday's home loss to Betis was the first time the Frenchman lost back-to-back La Liga games as a coach, with Real Madrid losing their penultimate game 3-1 against Real Sociedad at Anoeta.

Fewest La Liga goals since 1999-2000

Having sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus and failing to fill the void created by the Portuguese's departure, it is not shocking that Real Madrid have been wasteful in front of goal. Los Blancos' La Liga goals tally of 63 is their lowest in nearly two decades.

Most blanks since early 1993-94

The stat that proves how wasteful Los Blancos have been in front of goal can be measured by the fact that the game against Betis was the ninth occasion where they were unable to register a goal in the league in the 2018-19 season.

Lowest average attendance in two decades

Madrid's season began with a home attendance of 48,446, which was a decade low and as the results started to fade so did the attendance . The Spanish giants season yielded an average attendance of just 61,020 in La Liga. Last time Madrid recorded lesser attendance was way back in 1999-2000, when they averaged 57,500.

Real Madrid would be hoping to put behind this disastrous season and start afresh in the 2019-20 campaign and challenge Barcelona once again for the league title.
