What’s the story?

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner believes that Philippe Coutinho, who has failed to reach expecations in Camp Nou, regrets his decision to leave Anfield.

In case you didn’t know...

The Brazilian superstar caused all sorts of controversies before finally making a switch to the Catalan side in January for a fee of £105 million plus add-ons.

Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool management spent the transfer amount received by selling Coutinho wisely, splashing out on Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker to help transform the Reds into a world-class side.

The heart of the matter

Tom Werner, in his recent interview implied that great players moving to top clubs do not necessarily make successful stories, as he said:

“I would just point to the story of Philippe Coutinho.”
“I have only good things to say about Philippe. But I think he left Liverpool because he wanted to play for one of the two big Spanish clubs.
“We tried to convince him that we had the club moving in the right direction and that he could experience big Champions League occasions by staying at Liverpool. I think he probably regrets his decision.”

The Liverpool chairman implied that the Brazilian made the wrong decision in moving to the Camp Nou. Werner said he tried to convince Coutinho otherwise, but he just wanted to play for one of the biggest Spanish clubs.

Since his departure, Liverpool has been to two Champions League finals, and in the current edition thrashed Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate in a massive turnaround to reach the ultimate stage of the competition and set up a showdown with Tottenham.

The former Inter Milan star has never been able to establish himself at the Camp Nou and his hopes of rejuvenation were dented as his former side thrashed Barcelona at Anfield to secure a berth in the finals. The Blaugrana are looking to offload the star, with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain as the front runners.

What's next?

Liverpool take on Tottenham in the UEFA Champions League finals this weekend. Meanwhile Coutinho's future looks speculative as transfer rumors are on a swirl.
