Liverpool: Weekly wages of first-team stars revealed | Premier League 2020-21

Who is the highest-earning player at Liverpool?
Who is the highest-earning player at Liverpool?

Reigning Premier League champions Liverpool undoubtedly have one of the best squads in world football. Through smart signings and the work of boss Jurgen Klopp, some truly top-level talents now call Liverpool their home.

However, unlike some of their Premier League rivals, Liverpool surprisingly don’t break the bank when it comes to paying huge wage packets.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the weekly wages of Liverpool’s first-team stars during the 2020-21 season.

Note: all figures have been taken from Spotrac.com. Where data was unavailable or inaccurate, Sportekz.com was used.

#22 Adrian - £30,769 per week

Adrian has proven to be a solid deputy keeper for Liverpool.
Adrian has proven to be a solid deputy keeper for Liverpool.

Liverpool’s reserve goalkeeper Adrian is their lowest-paid first-team star, making around £30k per week on his current contract, which expires in the summer of 2021.

The Spaniard has been called into action more than Liverpool fans would’ve hoped in recent months. He made 11 Premier League appearances in 2019-20 and has made two thus far into 2020-21. But outside of a handful of costly errors, he’s proven himself to be a solid deputy for #1 keeper Alisson.

#21 Divock Origi - £49,500 per week

Divock Origi has scored a number of key goals for Liverpool.
Divock Origi has scored a number of key goals for Liverpool.

One of the heroes of Liverpool’s 2018-19 Champions League-winning campaign, striker Divock Origi makes just under £50k per week on his current deal, which runs until the summer of 2024. Never a first choice for Liverpool, the Belgian is still an able deputy.

However, the arrivals of Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino have meant that his chances have been cut down a little – he’s made just one appearance for the Reds this season. Whether he’s willing to simply be a reserve is a question that he’ll probably have to answer in the near future.

#20 Trent Alexander-Arnold - £60,000 per week

Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of football's most highly rated young stars.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of football's most highly rated young stars.

Considering he’s one of Jurgen Klopp’s key players, it’s surprising to learn that Trent Alexander-Arnold reportedly makes just £60k per week on his current deal, which runs until 2024. However, it is worth noting that the deal made the Liverpool right-back one of football’s highest-paid teenagers at the time he signed it.

Alexander-Arnold’s importance to the Liverpool cause cannot really be understated at this point – he made a ridiculous 13 assists in Premier League action last season. And while we haven’t seen him at his best thus far into 2020-21, he remains one of the best attacking full-backs on the planet.

#19 Konstantinos Tsimikas - £60,000 per week

Konstantinos Tsimikas has yet to make a Premier League appearance for Liverpool.
Konstantinos Tsimikas has yet to make a Premier League appearance for Liverpool.

A new signing in the recent transfer window, Greek international Konstantinos Tsimikas arrived at Liverpool in a £11.75m deal from Olympiacos. His current £60k-per-week contract runs until 2025, but thus far into 2020-21, we haven’t seen him in Premier League action.

However, it’s worth noting that Jurgen Klopp traditionally allows new signings time to embed into his squad. It took the likes of Andrew Robertson and Fabinho time to settle in, for instance – meaning that Tsimikas probably still has a bright future ahead of him at Anfield.

#18 Georginio Wijnaldum - £75,000 per week

Will Georginio Wijnaldum sign a new deal at Liverpool?
Will Georginio Wijnaldum sign a new deal at Liverpool?

Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum was a low-key signing for Liverpool back in 2016, but he’s developed into a key player for them. Wijnaldum has scored plenty of goals during his time at Anfield, including some highly important ones in key matches.

However, it’s been suggested that he’s reached an impasse when it comes to extending his current contract, which expires in the summer of 2021. Whether this has to do with him wanting an increase on his current £75k-per-week wages is unknown. But given his importance as of late, Liverpool would probably be best to do what it takes to sign him back up.

#17 Joe Gomez - £75,000 per week

Joe Gomez has become one of Liverpool's key defenders.
Joe Gomez has become one of Liverpool's key defenders.

Young England international Joe Gomez has grown in stature over the past couple of seasons at Liverpool and is now considered one of their first-choice center-backs alongside Virgil van Dijk. The 23-year-old signed his current deal in 2019, tying him to Liverpool until 2024 on a £75k-per-week contract.

Unfortunately, Gomez recently suffered a serious knee injury whilst on international duty and is now likely to miss the remainder of the 2020-21 campaign. Liverpool fans will be hoping he can return strongly in the early part of next season.

#16 Takumi Minamino - £75,000 per week

Liverpool fans are still waiting to see the best of Takumi Minamino.
Liverpool fans are still waiting to see the best of Takumi Minamino.

Signed last January from RB Salzburg in a £7.25m deal, Takumi Minamino is the first Japanese international to play for Liverpool. However, despite bringing a strong reputation with him, we’ve yet to really see the best of him in a red shirt.

Minamino has thus far only made 14 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, most of them from the bench. However, with a long and arduous season ahead, it’s likely that his chance in the starting line-up will come at some point in the near future.

#15 Xherdan Shaqiri - £80,000 per week

Xherdan Shaqiri usually acts as an impact substitute at Liverpool.
Xherdan Shaqiri usually acts as an impact substitute at Liverpool.

Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri joined Liverpool from Stoke City back in 2018. And while he was a key man for the Potters, he’s only been a bit-part player since arriving at Anfield. But to be honest, that probably doesn’t bother the attacker all that much.

He’s still been able to make a total of 46 appearances for the Reds, scoring eight goals, and has won the Premier League title and Champions League since joining the club. He’s also one of the best impact substitutes that a side like Liverpool could possibly ask for. And with a contract running until 2023, he’s likely to stay at Anfield for some time yet.

#14 Alisson Becker - £90,000 per week

Alisson has had a huge impact at Liverpool since joining them from Roma.
Alisson has had a huge impact at Liverpool since joining them from Roma.

Along with Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker has done more to change Liverpool’s fortunes since his arrival than any other player. Brought in from Roma in the summer of 2018 to replace the unfortunate Loris Karius, the Brazilian international has proven himself to be one of the Premier League’s best-ever goalkeepers.

He’s already helped Liverpool to a Champions League triumph and their first Premier League title, and his distribution is second-to-none when it comes to keepers. More to the point, the Reds simply don’t look like the same team without him. He more than justifies his current £90k-per-week wages.

#13 Diogo Jota - £90,000 per week

Diogo Jota has enjoyed an excellent start to his Liverpool career.
Diogo Jota has enjoyed an excellent start to his Liverpool career.

It came as somewhat of a surprise when Liverpool were able to sign attacker Diogo Jota from Wolves in the recent transfer window, as he’d been a key man for the Midlands side. The transfer has proven to be an absolute bargain thus far, too, as the Portuguese has performed fantastically since joining the Reds.

Jota has already scored seven goals for his new side – including a Champions League hat-trick against Atalanta – and some Liverpool fans are now clamoring for him to take Roberto Firmino’s spot in their first XI.

#12 Fabinho - £100,000 per week

Fabinho has become a key part of Liverpool's midfield.
Fabinho has become a key part of Liverpool's midfield.

It might’ve taken Brazilian midfielder Fabinho a bit of time to settle into life at Liverpool, but he’s grown into one of the Premier League’s best holding midfielders. Capable of playing as a center-back too, the former Monaco man is now considered one of the Reds’ key men on the pitch.

Last season saw Fabinho make a total of 28 appearances in the Premier League, where he scored two goals – including a screamer against Manchester City – and made three assists. Currently looking to bounce back from a hamstring injury, Liverpool fans will be hoping the Brazilian is back to his best soon.

#11 Joel Matip - £100,000 per week

Due to injuries, Liverpool may now have to rely on Joel Matip as their top defender.
Due to injuries, Liverpool may now have to rely on Joel Matip as their top defender.

Joel Matip has not always been Liverpool’s first-choice center-back, but the Cameroon international has tended to perform admirably whenever he’s been called upon. But with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez now out with long-term injuries, Matip’s importance to Liverpool’s cause is likely to increase tenfold.

Thus far, he’s made three Premier League appearances in 2020-21, but he’s now likely to end up at least equalling his total of 29 from the 2016-17 season. If he can ensure that Liverpool’s defense remains tight, he’ll be well worth his current £100k-per-week deal.

#10 Andrew Robertson - £100,000 per week

Andrew Robertson has become a key component in Liverpool's side.
Andrew Robertson has become a key component in Liverpool's side.

A low-key signing from Hull City back in 2017, Scottish left-back Andrew Robertson has grown into one of Liverpool’s key players in the seasons that have followed. A massive part of their deadly attack, Robertson’s raids down the left flank have become legendary.

The 2019-20 season saw him deliver a tremendous 12 assists in Premier League action, and he already has two to his name in the current campaign. Contracted to Liverpool until 2024, the Scottish international is likely to remain a first-team staple for many seasons to come.

#9 Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - £120,000 per week

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's Liverpool career has never quite taken off.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's Liverpool career has never quite taken off.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Liverpool career has been one largely of frustration thus far. He made the move to Anfield from Arsenal back in 2017 and cost a hefty £35m. But just when he appeared to be hitting top form, a severe knee injury derailed him.

Since the start of the 2018-19 campaign, Chamberlain has made just 45 appearances for Liverpool – a number he’ll definitely want to increase soon. Currently looking to return to training following another injury, could 2020-21 be the season in which the England international finally makes a proper impact at Anfield?

#8 Naby Keita - £120,000 per week

Naby Keita hasn't quite reached his best form at Liverpool yet.
Naby Keita hasn't quite reached his best form at Liverpool yet.

Signed with a big reputation from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2018, Naby Keita cost Liverpool £48m and currently earns £120k per week on his contract, which runs until 2023. However, it’s arguable that the Guinea international has not had the impact Jurgen Klopp was expecting.

Keita has made just 47 Premier League appearances since arriving at Anfield, as his playing time has been curtailed by a number of injuries. However, now looking to return to full fitness, Keita will be hoping to secure a spot in Liverpool’s starting XI for the remainder of the 2020-21 campaign.

#7 James Milner - £140,000 per week

James Milner is one of Liverpool's longest-serving players.
James Milner is one of Liverpool's longest-serving players.

One of Liverpool’s longest-serving players, 34-year-old veteran James Milner is undoubtedly at the tail-end of his career. However, the former England international has kept himself in tremendous shape, and his versatility still makes him a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Able to play anywhere in midfield and also as a left-back, Milner’s current contract takes him until the summer of 2022, when he’ll be 36 years old. Whether Liverpool want to keep him around past then is unknown, but right now, he remains highly useful to the cause and will be expected to play a major role this season due to the Reds’ injury issues.

#6 Jordan Henderson - £140,000 per week

Jordan Henderson is the only Liverpool captain to lift the Premier League title.
Jordan Henderson is the only Liverpool captain to lift the Premier League title.

Liverpool’s current captain, Jordan Henderson, isn’t the strongest technical player, but he certainly drives the Reds forward from the center of midfield. A key player for Jurgen Klopp, Henderson made a total of 30 Premier League appearances last season, and Liverpool were certainly better for his presence.

Currently 30 years old, Henderson’s £140k-per-week deal at Anfield runs until 2023. However, such is his importance – and legendary status as a Premier League title-winning captain – that he may well sign an extension and end his career on Merseyside.

#5 Sadio Mane - £150,000 per week

Sadio Mane was arguably Liverpool's most outstanding performer in 2019-20.
Sadio Mane was arguably Liverpool's most outstanding performer in 2019-20.

Arguably Liverpool’s most outstanding performer last season, Sadio Mane’s Premier League figures were outstanding. He scored 18 goals, made seven assists, and only missed three of the Reds’ matches in the 2019-20 campaign.

His importance has remained high at the beginning of 2020-21, as he’s already scored four goals in his first seven Premier League appearances. The Senegalese international was linked with a move to Real Madrid in 2018, but as he’s contracted at Liverpool until 2023, it’s likely he’ll remain a hero to Reds fans for some time yet.

#4 Virgil van Dijk - £180,000 per week

The arrival of Virgil van Dijk helped to change Liverpool's fortunes.
The arrival of Virgil van Dijk helped to change Liverpool's fortunes.

Perhaps no other signing has had such a transformative effect on his side’s fortunes as Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender was signed for around £75m from Southampton in January 2018 and immediately changed a formerly leaky defense into one of Europe's strongest.

Van Dijk did not miss a single minute of Premier League football in the 2019-20 season, and in fact, had barely missed a game point blank since his arrival at Anfield. However, the current campaign has seen him suffer a severe knee injury that will keep him sidelined for a long time. The big question remains how Liverpool will cope without him.

#3 Roberto Firmino - £180,000 per week

Roberto Firmino is one of Liverpool's key attackers.
Roberto Firmino is one of Liverpool's key attackers.

Although he doesn’t score as many goals as some fans would like, there’s no disputing the importance of Roberto Firmino to the Liverpool cause. The Brazilian is excellent at finding gaps in defenses that his teammates Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane can exploit. And 2019-20 saw him play in every Premier League game for the Reds.

Therefore, it should come as no surprise to learn that he’s one of Liverpool’s highest earners, taking home around £180k per week. With a contract running until the summer of 2023, it’s likely that the Brazilian will remain a key player for Jurgen Klopp for the foreseeable future.

#2 Thiago Alcantara - £192,308 per week

Thiago Alcantara was Liverpool's biggest summer signing.
Thiago Alcantara was Liverpool's biggest summer signing.

Liverpool’s biggest signing of the recent transfer window, Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara cost the Reds a paltry £20m – a small fee for such a highly rated player. Thiago had been plying his trade at Bayern Munich – where he’d won seven Bundesliga titles and the Champions League during his seven seasons there.

Given the Reds paid such a low fee for him, it should come as no surprise to see him as one of the side’s top earners on just under £200k per week.

Thus far into his Liverpool career, Thiago has struggled to make a real impact due to a positive COVID-19 test and an injury. However, his Reds career is still young, and with the passing ability to offer Liverpool a different dimension in midfield, he has plenty of time to be a huge success yet.

#1 Mohamed Salah - £200,000 per week

Mohamed Salah is currently Liverpool's highest-paid player.
Mohamed Salah is currently Liverpool's highest-paid player.

One of the outstanding players in the Premier League over the past few seasons, Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah stands as Liverpool’s highest earner. His current £200k-per-week deal runs until 2023, and based on what he’s done so far. There’s no doubt the club will want to keep him longer.

Salah has scored over 100 goals for the Reds in his time at Anfield and has been the club’s main source for goals throughout the period. While they have plenty of firepower, without Salah, they certainly wouldn’t be as dangerous – making his hefty contract worth every single penny.
