Man United News: Danny Welbeck Aiming For First-Team

Manchester united striker Danny Welbeck has stressed his willingness to fight for a place in the front-line by putting in good performances in pre-season. He took heart from the example of Javier Hernandez, and said that manager Alex Ferguson was looking forward to how he turned out on the pitch this coming season.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Welbeck expressed satisfaction with his loan spell last season at Sunderland, and said that his main aim at the moment was fitting into the United first team and getting more minutes under his belt. He cited the example of Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez and said players would be given chances to perform if they applied themselves well in training and worked hard. He said-

‘My main aim is to get games with United now.

‘What Javier did shows you that if you’re in form, the manager plays you – and he is always going to give youth a chance as well.

‘Javier was not starting most of the games at the start of the season but he was in the side later and was on top form.

‘We have got good competition among the strikers at United so you have just got to go out there and show what you can do.

‘I think I can break through if I get my opportunity and I’m going to give it the best shot I can.’

Welbeck said the loan spell with Sunderland last season helped him a lot. The Englishman scored six goals there, including a scintillating outing against Chelsea in a 3-0 win. He said that the added pressure to perform and more minutes in the first team helped improve his perspective on things, and he was ready to make the Man united starting line-up now as well.

He said-

‘It was the best thing for me to go on loan and get minutes under my belt,’

‘I went there and showed people what I can do by scoring goals in the Premier League and I have come back to United a bigger and better person.

‘Also, Fabio Capello took note, so I was delighted with that. When you are playing for the best team in the world, there are no limits and you can go as far as you want.

‘The manager was pleased with what I did last season and he is looking forward to what I can do this season.’
