Romelu Lukaku has admitted that he is not sure about his Manchester United future. The Belgian striker looks likely to leave United this summer.
In case you didn’t know….
Lukaku joined United on a whopping £75 million fee from Everton in 2017. He started his United career on a high scoring 27 goals in all competition. Since then, the Belgian striker has looked out of sorts after returning from the World Cup. He has faced constant criticism over his fitness by the fans and pundits alike. Despite putting in a decent performance against Chelsea recently, he has failed to cement his position under the new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The heart of the matter
After the match against Chelsea, Lukaku was asked by Sky Sports if he would still be at the club next season, he responded, “I don’t know, I am not here to entertain rumours. I am still under contract.”
He still has a contract at United till July 2021, but that hasn’t stopped the media from linking him to various top European clubs like Juventus and Bayern.
After the recent 1-1 draw against Chelsea, Manchester United are all but certain to miss out on the Champions League spots for next season. David De Gea was again at fault for Chelsea’s goal as he fumbled Rudiger’s long range shot that ultimately allowed Marcus Alonso to score the equaliser from close range.
Lukaku however defended De Gea when asked about the goalkeeper’s recent form.
“He has the been the best player at the club since when? Seven or eight years consistently,” the Belgian said. “I don’t think we should discredit him and suddenly say he is a bad goalkeeper. He has saved us so many times this. It happens to strikers, it happens to midfielders and now it is happening to him. He has to learn from it. We are here to support him and he is strong.
“He had a bad time at the start of his United career as I remember, and he was just a kid then but came through it. He did what he had to do then, turned it around, won trophies and became the best player at the club and he is a leader in the dressing room. Now it is up to us as a team to help him and trust his abilities.”
