Manipur opens Subroto campaign on a bright note

New Delhi, September 14: Pinjabati High School from Moirang (Manipur) defeated Betkuchi High School from Guwahati (Assam) 2-0 to kick-start their Pool A campaign on a pleasant note in the inaugural match of the Sub-Junior (u-14) section in the 57th edition of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament at the Dr. Ambedkar Stadium here today.

In a match in that saw both teams making cautious approach, the Manipur outfit came out winners, thanks to their enterprising and attacking forays in both halves. Striker Nani Singh opened the account for them in the eleventh minute while Maniratan Singh completed the task in the 46th minute to emerge clears winners and earn full points on the league table.

Indeed, Manipur were better placed right from the start and their intent was clear too, culminating in goals. On the other hand, the school from Assam, gasping for breath and gaps, found the going tough despite the team having its chances in both sessions.

Not only did they lack precision in finding gaps but they were also unable to pierce through the solid defense of Manipur. The team, which played well throughout last year, was somehow found wanting in this year’s opener.

Earlier, both team members were introduced to chief guest Air Marshal MK Malik AVSM VSM, who is also the Air Officer-in-Charge of Administration, The Air Marshal made some encouraging remarks during his brief introduction, cheering the players and advised them to make use of the opportunity provided by the Subroto Cup Tournament.

In the under-14 section, 36 teams are participating and they are divided into six pools of five and four teams each. The team that tops each group makes it to the knockout stage (quarterfinals), the first set of which are slated for September 20 while the second set will be played on September 24. The semifinals will be played on September 27and the final on September 29.

All pool matches in the sub-junior boys sections will be played at two venues, including NWC grounds, while matches from knockout will be staged at Dr. Ambedkar Stadium.
