Mizoram Premier League - Season 2 kicks off

The second edition of ‘Mahindra Two Wheelers’ Mizoram Premier League was ‘kicked off’ Friday Night, September, 27 by Lal Thanzara, the President of Mizoram Football Association at the I&PR Auditorium in Aizawl.

The first round of the ‘MPL 2′ will be start on October 8, all the first round matches will be played under the newly installed floodlights at the Lammual Stadium in Aizawl.

The ‘MPL Kick Off’ program was an entertainment program filled with songs, dances, unveilling of the official jersey’s of the MPL clubs, oath taking by the team captains, releasing of the MPL Handbook (all the MPL information, rules and regulations, etc are in the book) by the sponsors.

In his opening remark Lalnghinglova Hmar, the Honorary Secretary of the Mizoram FA, stated that due to the prevailling monsoon rain the installation of the floodlights at Lammual stadium could not be finished according to plans, therefore the start of the MPL 2 has to be pushed back by a week.

Before the start of the MPL 2, the first ever ‘MFA Super Cup’ will be played on the night of October 4 between the MPL 1 champions Dinthar FC and Chanmari FC, the champions of the MFA Cup 2012/13. The MFA Super Cup will also witnessed the official opening of the floodlights at the iconic Lammual ground, which the local media dupped as ‘The Mizo Wembley’ because of its historic association with the football game in the state.

Speaking before the ‘MPL Kick Off’, the president of Mizoram Football Association thanked the government of Mizoram, who has walked the extra mile for the promotion of football in the state by building three artificial turf grounds in the state, the fourth one is under construction. The MFA president also thanked the sponsors, the media partner Zonet Cable TV, the AIFF and all the stake holders.

All the matches of the MPL will be telecast live by Zonet Cable TV, the only satellite TV channel in the state; which will be accompanied by pre-match discussions, tactical analysis by the TV pundits, and post match presentation by the two TV presenters, both of whom happened to be the former ‘Miss Chapchar Kut’ with Chapchar Kut being a traditional festival of the Mizos.

The eight teams of the MPL will face each other twice during the course of the season. The first half of the season will be completed within this calendar year, the second half of the season will start next year – all the clubs will play 14 rounds each.
