Mumbai leg of The Legends Cup comes to a thrilling conclusion

WILLIS won the Mumbai leg and move on to the National Finals

The Mumbai leg of the Legends Cup saw it live up to its reputation as India’s elite corporate football event. The tournament saw talented footballers from various corporate houses participate. Since the time of its inception in the year 2011, the event has turned out to be hugely popular and saw great participation from the city, with close to 50 corporate teams.

Since the tournament sees a large number of teams every edition, the teams are divided after their performance on the first day, into 4 different categories, namely the Legend’s Cup, the Champions cup, The Elite cup and the Challengers cup.

For the Mumbai leg of the Legend’s Cup, a total of 45 teams registered to play in the prestigious tournament and they were further divided into 5 sub-categories: The Legend’s Cup, Champions Cup (Men), Elite Cup, Challengers Cup & Champions Cup(Women). The teams played their matches on the 10th and 11th of October.

The topper from each group qualified for the ‘Legends Cup’. The next top 8 teams made it to the Champions Cup(Men), the 10 teams after that to the Elite Cup and the last 10 played in the Challengers Cup.

The Final Results

The 2-day showpiece tournament saw some brilliant display of football from various teams in the tournament. The final of the Legends Cup was fittingly one of the most thrilling matches in which HDFC-B team squared off against Willis. 90-minutes could not separate the two teams, as they were tied 0-0 at the full-time whistle. The match went into penalties where WILLIS held their nerve to secure a famous win.

In the Challengers cup final showdown, Star TV emerged winners beating Asian Paints comprehensively. Meanwhile in the Elite Cup category, Direct-I secured victory against Group M. In the men’s round of the Champions Cup, Convonix lifted their trophy by beating Sunday Mobility and in the Women’s round, HDFC beat a strong team from JP Morgan.

The victors now move on to the grand finale of the event which will take place in December while the Delhi leg of the tournament takes place on the 7th and 8th of November. Maverick Solutions from Bangalore and WILLIS from Mumbai are the teams who have made it to the National Finals so far.
