Premier League 2018-19, Matchweek 6: Team of the Week

Cardiff City v Manchester City - Premier League
Gundogan and Silva both impressed in Wales

Arsenal's 2-0 win against Everton brought the curtain down upon yet another round of Premier League fixtures.

The weekend did not throw many surprises, as the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool romped to comfortable victories. Manchester United, however, dropped points against Wolves at Old Trafford after a 1-1 draw.

Chelsea's perfect start came to an end after a resolute West Ham side held them to a goalless draw in the London derby. Neighbours Arsenal notched their fifth consecutive victory against Everton. Their arch-rivals Tottenham won as well, beating Brighton and Hove Albion.

Cardiff's miserable start continued after their demolition by Manchester City and they are rooted to the bottom with Huddersfield, who are going through a similar phase. Cardiff City and Huddersfield were many's foremost candidates for the drop this season. Their early season form has not done enough to opinions.

There were plenty of players who made their mark this week in Premier League. Boasting of world's top footballing and coaching talent, it is difficult to stand out. Often, an inspired effort by a player is needed to lift their side. Such inspirational performances often end up changing the fortunes of their respective teams for good. On that note, is the Premier League team of the week:

Goalkeeper: Petr Cech

Arsenal v Everton - Premier League
Cech certainly earned his clean sheet today

Arsenal won 2-0 against Everton which may suggest that their defensive frailties were put to bed, but that was not the case. The Toffees had many openings, and Cech came big numerous times to preserve his clean sheet. The goalkeeper's performance was one of the best this gameweek as he overcame a stiff test with the fragile backline of Arsenal who were often struggling to deal with the Merseyside club's attacks.

The veteran goalkeeper made six saves. The former Chelsea goalkeeper was commanding in the box as he made numerous punches and claims in the box. He even made one tackle(!) as well, denying Everton starlet Dominic Calvert-Lewin after he was sent through early on.

Petr Cech's saves kept Arsenal afloat early on and then the Gunners went on to score twice in the second half to wrap up the three points. As Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the scorer of Arsenal's second goal said after the match, they owe "a big thanks" to Big Pete.

Defenders:

Left-back: Ben Chilwell

Leicester City v Huddersfield Town - Premier League

Leicester came back from a goal down to beat Huddersfield and Chilwell impressed at the King Power Stadium. The young full-back is renowned for his attacking inputs and he displayed the same again.

He made 5 key passes, which was more than any other player in the game. Other than that, he won 6 aerial duels, made 2 tackles and completed 1 dribble. It was an all-around display from the England international as he continues to impress and improve consistently.

Center-back: Joel Matip

Liverpool FC v Southampton FC - Premier League

Joe Gomez has been sensational for Liverpool this season but Jurgen Klopp rested the youngster against Southampton and Matip played his first minutes of the season.

He put in an accomplished display, which included a well-taken headed goal from a corner in the first half which set the Reds on course for the win. The Cameroon international made 3 interceptions, own 6 aerial duels and had most touches in the game.

Matip's performance will surely give Klopp a welcome option in defense as the fixtures pile up.

Center-back: James Tarkowski

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Burnley FC - Premier League

Burnley recorded their first win a season after defeating Bournemouth, a game in which their attack took the plaudits. But their backline performed well as well, keeping an in-form Bournemouth attack at bay.

Tarkowski was solid as ever, and the stats show it. He made 7 clearances, 3 interceptions, 2 blocks, 4 tackles and won 5 aerial duels. These are mammoth numbers across the board and they were crucial in Burnley clinching the clean sheet on the way to a valuable three points.

Right-back: Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United - Premier League

If you play Fantasy Premier League, you'll know him as an absolute legend, but reality also shows that he is a really good player.

The youngster put in a solid performance against Newcastle, completing 5 tackles, 4 dribbles, 3 interceptions, and 2 blocks. His ability on both the ends was visible once again, and his ceiling is sky high.

He has firmly nailed down the right-back spot at Palace and you wouldn't bet against him doing the same for England a couple of years down the line.

Midfielders:

Bernardo Silva

Cardiff City v Manchester City - Premier League

Manchester City romped to a comfortable 5-0 win and Bernardo Silva put in a showing. His namesake David was benched but as they say, every cloud has a 'silva' lining.

The Portuguese recorded a goal, assist, four key passes and three tackles and hugely impressed in the game. Sergio Aguero opened the scoring from Silva's precise pass. Then he scored himself, by virtue of a looping header to double CIty's advantage.

Bernardo had a tough first season in England but he is definitely getting up to speed now.

Wilfred Ndidi

Leicester City v Liverpool FC - Premier League

Flanked by Silva and Gundogan, Ndidi is the perfect player to provide the balance. He is adept at breaking opposition counters and moving the ball, and it was visible against Huddersfield.

The Nigerian made 6 tackles, 3 clearances, 2 blocks, and won 5 aerial duels. Ndidi has consistently impressed since joining the Foxes and aged just 21, he has a really bright future ahead of him.

Ilkay Gundogan

Cardiff City v Manchester City - Premier League
Gundogan curls in a delectable goal

Gundogan is another City midfielder who makes the list, and the German also recorded a goal and an assist.

His goal was a thing of beauty, as he combined with Raheem Sterling and curled a beauty past Neil Etheridge. Then he set up Riyad Mahrez for an easy finish with a pinpoint cross.

His play respected the number on his back, and performances like these will mean that Kevin De Bruyne's absence is not felt that keenly.

Forwards:

Left-wing: Aaron Lennon

Burnley FC v AFC Bournemouth - Premier League
Lennon was a nightmare for the Bournemouth defense

His energy was contagious as his teammates followed his example. Lennon scored with a sliding finish and also set up Ashley Barnes to complete the rout. Also, the contribution on the defensive end should not be ignored and his 4 tackles are proof of that. Lennon was one of the main reasons why Burnley registered their maiden league win and he was a livewire throughout the game.

Burnley look to have their tails up and Lennon is sure to be one of their key players going forward.

Striker: Jamie Vardy

Leicester City v Huddersfield Town - Premier League

Vardy returned from suspension last week but Leicester received a hiding then and his return went unnoticed. He was definitely noticed against Huddersfield, starring in a comeback win for the Foxes.

He set up Kelechi Iheanacho for the equalizer early on, then raced on to the Nigerian's pass to wrap up the win for his side late on. Vardy took 7 shots and made 3 tackles as well. His retirement from England duties will surely boost his Leicester career and that looked to be the case on Saturday.

Left-wing: Johann Berg Gudmundsson

Preston North End v Burnley - Pre-Season Friendly
Preston North End v Burnley - Pre-Season Friendly

Lennon's teammate Gudmundsson also makes the eleven, as both of Burnley's flanks saw good performances.

The Iceland international had one assist, which was a delicate cross to Lennon. He also created another goal, as Barnes scored off the rebound when his shot came off the post. Gudmundsson also made 2 key passes and 2 tackles to complete a great showing.
