Will Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster break through in 2019/20?

Another new season is nearly upon us, with the beginning of 2019/20 less than a week away now for most clubs. Of course, once the 9th of August rolls around, all attentions will turn to the new Premier League season – which begins with a big match between last season’s runners-up Liverpool and newly promoted Norwich City.

One of the most intriguing things about any new season is waiting to see which younger talent might make an impact on the big stage, and with the Premier League offering the biggest stage in the world to young prospects, it’s up to those players to seize the moment.

Here are 5 young stars who could make a big impact in 2019/20.

#1 Rhian Brewster

2017’s under-17 World Cup saw Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster pick up the Golden Boot trophy after scoring 8 goals in England’s victorious tournament, but 2018/19 was not kind to the youngster as he suffered serious injuries to his ankle and knee which ruled him out for practically the whole season. Now fully fit, could 2019/20 be the season that Brewster makes a big impact on the Premier League? Quite possibly.

It is true that he’s not going to have it easy at Liverpool; their front trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are as highly regarded as any in the world right now, and they scored a total of 56 goals between them last season. But that doesn’t mean there’s no room for Brewster to take some playing time – Divock Origi was considered the forgotten man at Anfield as 2018/19 began and yet he made 20 appearances and scored 6 goals, including crucial ones in the Champions League semi-final and final.

Of course, Origi is still around, proving Brewster with some stiff competition for a spot – but Daniel Sturridge has now left Liverpool and according to reports, Jurgen Klopp has promised Brewster some valuable playing time in the upcoming season. And with his natural finishing instincts and all-round abilities, it seems a safe bet that the England youngster will make the most of any chances thrown his way.

#2 Kyle Walker-Peters

Kyle Walker-Peters could become Tottenham's first choice right-back in 2019/20

Tottenham’s young right-back Kyle Walker-Peters has been kicking around Mauricio Pochettino’s first team for a while now, but last season was the first time we saw him with some real opportunities. We saw the best of him and the worst of him, too; his mistake allowed Ousmane Dembele to open the scoring when Spurs took on Barcelona at the Nou Camp, but then he created 3 of Spurs’ 5 goals when they defeated Bournemouth on Boxing Day.

This season should theoretically see Walker-Peters given even more opportunities to star in the first team at Tottenham’s new stadium. First-choice right-back Kieran Trippier has been sold to Atletico Madrid and while Serge Aurier remains at Tottenham, Pochettino has shown a distrust of the Ivorian defender ever since he arrived at the club back in 2017, which means that with a good start to the season, Walker-Peters could well establish himself as one of the first names on the Spurs team sheet.

The good thing for Spurs fans is that Walker-Peters has all the tools to become one of the best full-backs in the Premier League. He’s quick, athletically gifted and has a great delivery from the right side of the pitch. And given Tottenham have rebuffed any offers for him – whether that’s a loan or a permanent move – it seems the future is bright for the England u20 World Cup winner.

#3 Mason Mount

Mason Mount is already enjoying an excellent pre-season with Chelsea

Many pundits have predicted doom – of sorts – for Chelsea this upcoming season as the Blues are currently under a transfer ban and are unable to strengthen their squad, and they also have a rookie manager in the form of club legend Frank Lampard at the helm. Those who do not believe in the doom and gloom however have pointed out that due to the ban, Lampard is likely to use Chelsea’s considerable academy products. The jewel in that crown right now? Midfielder Mason Mount.

Mount spent 2018/19 on loan at Derby County under Lampard and had an extremely impressive season at the Championship club, appearing in 38 games, scoring 9 goals and delivering 4 assists too. A creative midfielder capable of finding a pass capable of unlocking even the tightest defence, the England u21 international will likely be given opportunities to prove himself in Chelsea’s first team from the beginning of the season.

The signs are already looking good, too; in a recent friendly win against Reading, Mount – who came on as a second-half substitute – scored twice in the space of three minutes to allow Chelsea to come out on top. Given the patchy form last season of the Blues’ other creative midfielders such as Ross Barkley, the likelihood is that Lampard will put his trust in Mount – and with any luck, that trust will be repaid.

#4 Phil Foden

Pep Guardiola has described Phil Foden as the most talented player he's ever seen

A recent interview with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola saw a fascinating quote from the Spanish boss. According to Guardiola, who has of course worked with the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Arjen Robben and Sergio Aguero, the most talented player he’s ever seen is actually City youngster Phil Foden. That’s some high praise given Foden has only played in a handful of games for City’s first team, but it also suggests that Guardiola is finally ready to give the England u21 star his big break in 2019/20.

Fans have been crying out to see more from Foden for a long time now, but it’s quite clear why Guardiola hasn’t been willing to roll the dice on him just yet; he’s had one of the greatest players in the history of the Premier League in the form of David Silva ahead of him in the pecking order. But Silva is now 33 years old and is about to leave the Etihad at the end of the season – which should mean more opportunities for Foden this time around.

An incredible talent with phenomenal dribbling and passing skills, it’s easy to understand why Guardiola rates the 19-year old so highly. The fact that he’s never been sent out on loan – and has instead stayed at City to learn from Guardiola and players like Silva and Kevin de Bruyne – says a lot, as does the fact that the club haven’t signed any new players in that position this summer. Expect Foden to finally make an impact this season – and a big one at that.

#5 Mason Greenwood

Could Mason Greenwood really start Manchester United's first league game against Chelsea?

Despite all the detractors of Manchester United’s new permanent boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer due to their poor finish to 2018/19, it seems that fans have already begun to be hopeful about the future at Old Trafford this summer. Not only is that due to the signing of young, exciting talent like Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but it’s also down to the emergence of some blue-chip prospects from United’s academy. The best of the lot? Striker Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood – who emerged into the Red Devils’ first team last season and even appeared in their breathtaking Champions League victory over Paris St. Germain as a substitute – is still just 17 years old, but seemingly everyone involved in the club has high praise for him. Teammate Marcus Rashford recently claimed he had “frightening” talent, while Solskjaer has already suggested he could start in United’s first Premier League game against Chelsea.

The early signs in pre-season have been good, too – he’s started in 3 of United’s games thus far and scored against both Leeds and Inter Milan. With a seemingly natural finishing ability and plenty of speed and confidence, if Greenwood can continue on his current path there’s no reason why he can’t make a big impact on the Premier League – joining Rashford, and other United academy graduates like Jesse Lingard, David Beckham and Paul Scholes in the process.
