What's the news?

Former England and Liverpool defender Phil Thompson believes that Premier League fans fear a dominant Reds side. Speaking to Sky Sports, Thompson expressed the opinion that the Merseysiders could spark another era of supremacy by winning the league this season.

In case you didn't know...

With five Champions League and 18 league titles, Liverpool are one of the most successful teams in England. They dominated English football during the '70s and '80s, and were also a powerful presence in European competitions.

However, they have lost their supremacy in the last few decades; the Reds are yet to lift a league title since 1990. To add to that, they have won just one trophy in the last 10 years.

Nevertheless, things might change soon, as Liverpool are flying high under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp at the moment. They are currently 2nd in the Premier League table and are going toe-to-toe with Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur for the ultimate glory.

The heart of the matter

Phil Thompson believes that the current Liverpool team has the potential of dominating English football as they did in the '70s and '80s, and that Premier League fans are worried about that.

"A lot of fans are worried about the cycle coming around again, not just Manchester United. They are frightened. That's why they are starting to get nervous of Liverpool winning the Premier League again," Thompson said.

"A lot of people don't want it like the 70s and 80s again and a lot of people wouldn't want Manchester United to do it again," he added.

Thompson is probably echoing a common sentiment that prevails across all sports - a single team dominating the competition is never an attractive proposition for the fans. That said, Liverpool are very far away from reaching that state.

What's next?

Liverpool will host Bayern Munich at Anfield for the first leg of the Champions League round-of-16 tie next before squaring off against Manchester United in the league on February 24.
