Reports: Bale tells Villas-Boas that he wants to join Real Madrid

Gareth Bale – On his way out?

Gareth Bale moved closer to getting his dream transfer to Real Madrid when he reportedly informed the Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas that he wants to quit the club to join the Spanish giants.

Bale was at Tottenham’s north London training centre, where he underwent treatment for a muscle injury and then departed shortly after 2 pm BST.

According to Sky Sports, the 24-year-old took the opportunity to reiterate his desire to leave for Spain.

Real Madrid, who have identified Bale as their priority signing in this transfer window, have a bid of £85 million for the player on table, though Spurs are holding out for a figure close to £100 million.

Bale is yet to publicly announce his intent to leave to avoid damaging his relationship with the club and its supporters. Spurs are yet to comment on the world record bid lodged by Real and have not wavered publicly on their stance that the player is not for sale.

Real Madrid officials and players have spoken of the club’s eagerness to Gareth Bale.

Club legend and now ambassador Zinedine Zidane has said: “The chance to play for Real Madrid might only come around once in a player’s lifetime – and it is understandable that Gareth doesn’t want to miss out on it.”

Goalkeeper Iker Casillas has praised Bale, saying “We are talking about one of the top three or four best players in Europe. Every transfer is controversial in its own way but we are speaking about a very good, decisive player. I’m sure we’ll make another signing before the transfer window shuts.”
