Former Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen could make a sensational return to Manchester United as part of Louis van Gaal’s coaching staff just a year after he left Old Trafford, report the Express.

The Dutchman enjoyed a successful stint at the Red Devils as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant before he left the club last summer when new boss David Moyes opted to bring in his own coaching staff when he took the reins.

However, his managerial debut was anything but a success when he took over from the sacked Martin Jol for an ill-fated tenure in west London.

Meulensteen inherited a squad low on confidence but failed to turn their form around and also made several questionable decisions, which ultimately contributed to the Cottager’s relegation from the Premier League.

Despite his disastrous spell in charge of Fulham, the Dutchman is still well regarded at United and his reputation as both a coach and number two remain intact.

With his countryman van Gaal expected to be appointed within the next week, Meulensteen has emerged as an unlikely candidate to return to United.

The Red Devils are set for a busy summer as they look to restructure their squad so it is able to compete for silverware next season.
