Seven greatest managers in the history of the Premier League

Manchester United v Arsenal - Premier League
Top three in Premier League

Since its inception in 1992, the English Premier League has seen more than 200 managers come and go. Some of the renowned football tacticians from all over the globe have tested their skills and talent in the best and the most lucrative league in the world.

Being a Premier League manager is perhaps one the most demanding job in the sporting world.

The Premier League is in its 27th year, yet there have been just ten title-winning managers in the history of the league and surprisingly three men have won it more than once. This shows how difficult, it is for any manager to win a league. But due to economic disparity among the clubs in the division, most teams strive for just survival whereas some others are content with a mid-table finish.

Each club has its own set of expectations which the manager is entitled to fulfil. Several managers in past have consistently punched above their weight and managed to exceed expectations of fans and owners.

Managers capability to manage his available resources(players at his disposal and funds available) to get the absolute best out of them and not just winning trophies defines a successful manager. Few managers have achieved such kind of success in the premier league, which makes their achievements even great.

This list ranks managers based on their overall performance, focus on youth development, optimum use of club resources, ability to deliver consistent results and exceed expectations in their managerial career.

Honourable Mention:

Liverpool v Manchester City - Carling Cup Semi Final Second Leg
Kenny Dalglish and Roberto Mancini

Kenny Dalglish

Kenny Dalglish in his highly successful managerial career led Liverpool to three first division titles before the inception of Premier League. After leaving Liverpool, Dalglish joined Blackburn Rovers when they were in Division Two. He took them to the Premier League and in three years guided them to the league title. Dalglish returned to management with Liverpool in January 2011 and managed to stay at the helm till the end of 2012 season.

Roberto Mancini

Mancini was the man entrusted by Emirati owners who were willing to invest millions in the team. When he took over, Manchester City was a Mid-table club and he led them to their first premier league title in just his second full season with the club. He also won an FA Cup with the blue Manchester club.

Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur FC Training Session and Press Conference

Under Pochettino, Tottenham has consistently managed to finish in top 3 of the premier league since the 2015-16 season, even ahead of some of the established names like Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. That too despite spending a fraction of what they do in the transfer market. He also had a successful stint with Southampton in premier league where he managed eight-placed finish in his first full season.

Former Argentine international, Pochettino in his short managerial career has gained the reputation of developing local players from the youth academies of the clubs he managed. Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, and Danny Rose are just a few of the players who benefitted by playing under Pochettino.

Sam Allardyce

Sunderland v Everton - Premier League
Sam the relegation firefighter

Most people might not agree with this choice but the man who managed seven different clubs in the Premier League and never got relegated surely deserves his place among the elite. Sam in is long managerial career never got chance to take up a job at a top club, which is primarily the reason why he never won any trophy or had any top four league finishes.

Premier league clubs mostly went for Sam, when they found themselves in danger of being relegated and he managed to get them to safety every single time. Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, and Everton are some of the clubs where he performed successful firefighting job. Sam is also known for being "one of the pioneers of sports science in English football". He was one of the first managers to use modern performance analysis techniques and technology in coaching his teams. Sam managed 512 games in his Premier League career with 174 wins and 200 losses.

Harry Redknapp

Queens Park Rangers Training Session and Press Conference
Best English Manager

Arguably the best English manager to manage in Premier League, Harry managed a host of different premier league and championship clubs during his 35-year long career in football management. Having managed 641 matches in the premier league itself, Redknapp saved Portsmouth from relegation and was responsible for West Hams highest ever premier league finish (fifth in 1999). He also won an FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008

Under his management, Tottenham finished in top five of premier league for three years in a row and guided them to the quarter-finals of 2010-11 Champions league. Not renowned for his tactical nous, Harry is very good at motivating players to perform at their optimum best

Claudio Ranieri

Leicester City v Everton - Premier League
Claudio Ranieri

The architect of Leicester City's improbable Premier League title win in the 2015-16 season. Ranieri against all odds managed to shock the footballing world by bringing home the league title with the team which was had narrowly escaped relegation in its previous season.

People often tend to forget that he had a very successful stint as a Chelsea manager between 2000 to 2004 before being replaced by Jose Mourinho. He has an impressive managerial CV where he also managed some of the top clubs in Italy, Spain, and France.

Jose Mourinho

Wigan Athletic v Manchester United - Pre Season Friendly
The true Special One

Self-proclaimed "Special One" was chosen by Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich to spearhead Chelsea into a new era of domination. With the help of Abramovich's riches, Jose delivered two League titles in his first stint as a Chelsea manager before being sacked in September 2007. Mourinho returned to Chelsea during 2013 and delivered another league title the following season. After a poor start to a 2015-16 season, Mourinho was forced to leave Chelsea for the second time in his career. Upon sacking of Louis Van Gaal, Manchester United appointed Mourinho as their new manager. He won Europa League in his first season and secured a second place league finish the following season.

Mourinho, who is known to be one of the greatest football tacticians of the modern generation has won league titles in all the countries that he has managed in, including three in England (Second behind Sir Alex and equal with Wenger). With Two Champions League and numerous other trophies, Jose arguably has the most impressive managerial CV in the World football.

Arsene Wenger

Manchester City v Arsenal - Premier League
Mr.Arsenal

One of the greatest managers of the modern era, Arsene Wenger managed 828 premier league games, more than any other manager. A man who was responsible for the only undefeated season in Premier League history(2003–04) with his so-called his "Invincible" side, revolutionized English football with his ideas about fitness regimens and raising the levels of professionalism. He won three premier league titles and 7 FA cups with the gunners.

Wengers specialized in scouting talented, exhilarating young players from all over the planet(especially Africa and France) and grooming them into stars. Players like Thierry Henry, Robin Van Persie, and Cesc Fàbregas owe their success to the Frenchman.

Wenger made sure that Arsenal remained competitive in the league and managed a top-four league finish every single time, even during the financial crises in the second half of previous decade when the club was often forced to sell their best players to pay back the loans which were taken to build the Emirates stadium.

Sir Alex Fergusen

Manchester United v Aston Villa - Premier League
The greatest One

If this list gets compiled 50 years from today, this man in all likelihood will still be on the Number one position.

The man who managed to win 13 premier league, five FA Cups and two champions league titles in 26 years with Manchester United, is unarguably the best Football manager the game has ever seen. He also unsurprisingly, is the manager with most premier league wins(410) and most premier league points(1752) in the history of the league. Ferguson won 11 manager of the season awards, 27 manager of the month awards and managed record 190 games in UEFA Champions League

Apart from winning numerous trophies, Fergusen excelled throughout his career in establishing and improving young players and getting best out of them for a sustained period of time. Even though he often spent big in the transfer market, his reliance and faith in homegrown talent and academy graduates helped Fergusen deliver consistent success for good part of 25 years.
