Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has revealed that Carlo Ancelotti was approached by Sir Alex Ferguson to succeed him an Manchester United.

Although Ancelotti has denied any such reports, Perez says he is sure a conversation took place.

"I'm absolutely sure," Perez said. "Not this year, but last year. Ferguson asked him to succeed him."

Manchester United finally went ahead and hired David Moyes to take the hot seat at Old Trafford – a move that backfired as United finished seventh in the League and missed out on qualifying for the Champions League

Ancelotti has been adamant that he was never offered to take up the United job.

"No, no, not true," he said last week. "When I decided to leave Paris Saint-Germain I had the opportunity to come here (Madrid). I didn't want to stay at PSG."

The move worked out well for Ancelotti as he helped Real Madrid win their tenth European crown and also won the Copa del Rey title.
