The 2020-21 Premier League season is in its final stages, with just four rounds of fixtures remaining for most sides.

Manchester City are the potential winners of this season’s Premier League title, leading arch-rivals, Manchester United, by 13 points. The battle for the top four is still wide open, with Leicester City facing a shock 4-2 defeat at home to Newcastle United. This gives the likes of West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur a small window to make a claim for the coveted Champions League spot.

Premier League 2020-21: Golden Boot contenders

We’ve seen some of Europe’s finest goalscorers in action in the Premier League this season, and the Golden Boot race is heating up in its last leg. With a total of 897 goals in the 2020-21 season, this has been one of the highest-scoring campaigns of the Premier League era.

On that note, let’s take a look at five contenders for the coveted Premier League Golden Boot this season:

#5 Dominic Calvert-Lewin | 15 goals

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has continued his fine goalscoring form from the previous campaign, scoring 20 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions so far this season.

The Toffees are in contention for a Europa League spot this season, and the Englishman deserves praise for his part in it.

Calvert-Lewin’s 15 goals in the 2020-21 Premier League season makes him Everton’s top-scorer by a country-mile, with Richarlison a distant second with 6 goals.

The 24-year-old also has with an impressive xG (expected goals) of 15.79 in the Premier League this season, while averaging 20 passes per match, with a pass completion rate of 69%.

Calvert-Lewin has been involved in 24 goals (20 goals, 4 assists) across all competitions this season.

Even though Everton have ebbed and flowed through the course of this Premier League season, featuring in the top 4 for a brief period, the young Englishman has been their most consistent performer.

Calvert-Lewin finds himself in fifth place in the Premier League’s Golden Boot standings.

#4 Son Heung-Min | 16 goals

Son Heung-Min has been one of the few positives in a dismal season for Tottenham Hotspur. The spectacular partnership between Son and Harry Kane is the only reason why Spurs stand an outside chance of making it into the top four by the end of the season.

Son is arguably having the best season of his career - with a direct involvement in 38 goals (21 goals, 17 assists) from 47 appearances across all competitions this season.

Son and Kane have established themselves as Premier League’s most lethal partnership in a single campaign, combining to score 14 goals so far this season. They beat Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton’s record of 13 goals in the 1994-95 season. They also have an all-time tally of 34 goal combinations, only second to Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard’s 36 goals.

Son has been as crucial as Harry Kane in giving Tottenham Hotspur a fighting chance at a top-4 finish. The six-time Asian Footballer of the Year has an incredible xG of 9.88 - coupled with an xA (expected assists) of 8.98 in the 2020-21 PL season.

#3 Bruno Fernandes | 16 goals

Bruno Fernandes has been sensational in his relatively short spell at Manchester United.

Following his arrival in the 2020 winter transfer window, the Portuguese midfielder made an immediate impact, propelling the Red Devils to a top-4 finish in the previous campaign. He was involved in 20 goals (12 goals, 8 assists) from just 22 appearances in his six-month cameo last season.

While some expected a dip in form, the 26-year-old only got better in the 2020-21 Premier League season. He leads his Manchester United teammates in goals and assists, with 16 goals and 11 assists from 33 PL appearances.

In 53 appearances across all competitions this season, Fernandes has been involved in 43 goals (26 goals, 17 assists). In the process, he has established himself as a leader in Manchester United’s squad, acting as the much-needed catalyst for their resurgence.

#2 Mohamed Salah | 20 goals

Mohamed Salah has been one of the most consistent goalscorers in the Premier League over the past few years, winning the Golden Boot consecutively in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.

The Egyptian ace is a strong contender this season as well, with 20 goals to his name from 32 PL appearances. He is currently second in the Premier League Golden Boot standings, trailing Harry Kane by just one goal.

Liverpool are having a horrid time in their defense of the Premier League title, but Salah has consistently found his name on the scoresheet, scoring a goal every 132 minutes. He has one of the highest xG in the English top flight (17.84), with a shot accuracy of 43% and a conversion ratio of 19%.

Salah has scored in three of his last four Premier League appearances and is a solid contender for his third Golden Boot in four years.

#1 Harry Kane | 21 goals

Harry Kane has established himself as one of world football’s most lethal strikers with another stellar season for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Englishman has already built a reputation as a goal-machine, but he’s added a new dimension to his game with a range of passing at his disposal.

Kane scored 24 goals in the 2019-20 season but notched up just 2 assists. This season, however, the 27-year old has recorded 16 assists, along with 31 goals across all competitions.

Kane leads the Premier League charts in terms of both assists (13) and goals (21), making him a strong contender for the PFA Player of the Year award as well.

The two-time Golden Boot winner has been involved in 56% of Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League goals this season, having played 89% of Spurs' minutes in the PL.

After another trophy-less season with the Lilywhites, Kane might just be on the move to one of Europe’s top dogs in the upcoming transfer window.
