Transfer deadline day is fast approaching in the Premier League
Transfer deadline day is fast approaching in the Premier League

The clock is ticking down, and the curtain is preparing to be drawn on the 2018/19 Summer transfer window.

The final 24 hours of the transfer window is one of the most exciting in football, with fans up and down the UK glued to their television sets, hoping that their club doesn't lose any major players and that they can pull off a shock signing or two of their own.

The final day of the window is normally full of excitement, with journalists scrambling from training ground to training ground, desperately trying to spot players making their big moves. Over the years, there have been some truly shocking deadline day transfers, and there have been plenty that have had a huge impact on a team's campaign.

With the end of this year's transfer window looming, let's take a look at 10 of the best transfer deadline day signings of all time.

10: Hugo Lloris, Lyon to Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United - Premier League
Lloris has become one of the best keepers in the Premier League

Hugo Lloris' arrival at Tottenham on deadline day in 2012 turned out to be an inspired move by the then Tottenham gaffer, Andre Villas-Boas.

The French international joined for around £8 million pounds on the final day of the window in what was a busy day for the North London club.

While he didn't get into the team straight away, Lloris eventually unseated Brad Friedel to become the club's number one and has held the position ever since. Lloris would go on to keep nine clean sheets in 25 games in his first season at White Hart Lane.

While he has not won any silverware at the club, Lloris has helped Spurs finish in the top three in the last three years in the Premier League.

9: Dimitar Berbatov - Tottenham to Manchester United

Manchester United v Fulham - Premier League
Berbatov's goals helped United win two league titles

Dimitar Berbatov is perhaps the coolest striker to ever grace the Premier League, and he is often wrongly forgotten about when talking about the best United players of the last decade.

Berbatov joined United from Spurs in 2008 for just over 30 million, after an impressive 3 years at White Hart Lane. The Bulgarian would go on to spend four seasons at Manchester United, scoring 56 goals in 149 appearances and winning two Premier League trophies.

His 21-goal contribution in the 2010-11 campaign was pivotal in United's title race, and he contributed at least 10 goals in all but one of his other campaigns with the club.

Berbatov would leave the club in 2012, going on to find success at Fulham, before leaving England two years later.

8: Sadio Mane, Red Bull Salzburg to Southampton

Southampton v Crystal Palace - Premier League
Sadio Mane became a star at Southampton

Sadio Mane was something of an unknown when Southampton spent over £11 million to secure his services in 2014, but the Senegalese star wasted no time making a name for himself in the Premier League.

It took Mane just over a month to grab his first goal for the Saints, and he would go on to grab 10 goals in his first season for the club, including the fastest hattrick in Premier League history against Aston Villa in an emphatic 6-1 victory.

He would help guide Southampton to a 7th and 6th place finish during his two years at the club, before departing and signing for Liverpool for £34 million two years after he arrived in England.

7: Dele Alli - MK Dons to Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United - Premier League
Dele Alli is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League

It seems crazy to think that Dele Alli only made his Premier League debut three years ago. The World Cup semi-finalist has become one of the best midfielders in the division and there is every chance he will move on from Tottenham to play for one of Europe's big clubs in the future.

Spurs signed Alli back in 2015 from MK Dons, spending £5 million on the then 19-year-old. The North London club would loan Alli back to MK for the remainder of the season, and he would help the Dons finish second in League One and gain promotion to the Championship.

Since then, Alli has been instrumental in Tottenham's success, scoring 46 goals in 146 appearances and making the PFA team of the year in two of his three seasons at the club.

6: Mesut Ozil - Real Madrid to Arsenal

Arsenal v Chelsea - International Champions Cup 2018
Arsenal shocked the world when they secured the signing of Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil has had a pretty rough ride over the last twelve months but his move to The Emirates in 2013 still remains as one of Arsene Wenger's finest signings towards the end of his Arsenal run.

Ozil had been a regular in Real Madrid's side before joining the gunners, and Ronaldo even expressed disappointment in Ozil leaving the Spanish giants.

The German international has gone on to make 142 appearances for the North London club, and has scored 27 goals for them along the way.

5: Marouane Fellaini, Standard Liege to Everton

Norwich City v Everton - Premier League
Fellaini quickly became a fan favourite at Goodison

Fellaini has become something of a punch-line in football since his move to Manchester United in 2013, but the Belgium international will always be remembered fondly by his original English club, Everton.

Arriving on the last day of the transfer window in 2008, Fellaini would go on to earn cult status at Goodison, becoming a club icon and making himself a player to watch in the Premier League.

The Belgian would go on to leave Everton five years later, alongside boss, David Moyes, but his time at Merseyside will always be the defining years of his career.

4: Carlos Tevez - Corinthians to West Ham

West Ham United v Bolton Wanderers
Carlos Tevez helped West Ham survive relegation

If you were listening carefully on August 31st 2016, you would have heard the collective sound of thousands of jaws hitting the floor as West Ham revealed the double signing of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano from Corinthians.

Later reports would suggest that other Premier League clubs had avoided signing the players because of third party involvement but this was still one of the most surprising coups in Premier League history.

While Mascherano never really found his feet at Upton Park, Tevez would go on to be a club legend, scoring at Old Trafford on the final day of the season to keep the hammers in the Premier League.

3: Ashley Cole - Arsenal to Chelsea

Chelsea v West Bromwich Albion - Premier League
Ashley Cole found great success at Stamford Bridge

A tapping up scandal shrouded Ashley Cole's move from Arsenal to Chelsea in controversy back in 2005 but the left-back would go on to become one of the best signings ever made by the club.

Chelsea spent £5million and sent William Gallas to The Emirates to secure Cole and he was worth every penny.

Cole would go on to make over 300 appearances for the club, winning nine trophies with them in the process.

2: Luis Suarez - Ajax to Liverpool

Liverpool v Newcastle United - Premier League
Suarez nearly won the Premier League at Liverpool

Luis Suarez arrived at Liverpool on the same day as Andy Carroll, and amazingly, the Uruguayan cost nearly 15 million less than his English counterpart.

Suarez cost Liverpool £22.8 million back in 2011, and has to be considered one of the best bargains in Premier League history.

The controversial star would go on to bang in 82 goals in 133 appearances for the Reds, before securing himself a five-year contract with La Liga giants, Barcelona.

1: Wayne Rooney - Everton to Manchester United

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United - Premier League
Rooney made over 500 appearances for Manchester United

Wayne Rooney became the most expensive youngster in Premier League history when he joined Manchester United for £25 million in 2004, but the 18-year-old striker would quickly prove he was worth every last penny.

Rooney scored a hattrick and got an assist in his debut for Manchester United, and that was just a glimpse of what was to come from the former Everton star.

Rooney would go on to play over 500 times for Manchester United, scoring 282 goals and winning 16 trophies with the club in the process.
