Twitter reacts as Cristiano Ronaldo beats Messi to Champions League record

It was a night to remember for Cristiano Ronaldo as the Portuguese ace helped Juventus secure a last 16 spot in the UEFA Champions League for the fifth year in a row, thereby setting a new club record.

The Bianconeri went head-to-head with Valencia in a crucial 1-0 win over their opponents.

Max Allegri's new star recruit Ronaldo played a vital role in the match-winning goal as he provided the assist for Mario Mandzukic in the 59th minute.

Speaking of the Ronaldo effect on the team, Allegri told Sky Sport Italia, “Cristiano Ronaldo? He gives us a lot of confidence and he helps us achieve the results that we want. We have been doing much better and we have been improving all year long.”

The night also marked the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's 100th Champions League win, beating longstanding rival Lionel Messi to the record.

Ronaldo now stands as the first player in football history to achieve a hundred Champions League wins.

If all goes well at Juventus, Ronaldo will also be set to be the first player to win a Champions League title in three leagues, having already won trophies with Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Ronaldo has a number of Champions League records to his name. The former Real Madrid star is also the competition's all-time top-scorer, having netted 121 goals so far. He is also the player with the second highest appearances in the top competition, only behind Iker Casillas.

As the Portuguese star continues his exploits in Italy, the records will only continue to topple.
