Manchester City kept their title hopes alive with a commanding 3-1 win over Arsenal at the Etihad on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s side currently sit behind high-flying Liverpool in the Premier League table and look like they will run the Reds close till the end of the season.

A hat-trick from Sergio Aguero was enough to hand Manchester City the perfect result ahead of a congested fixture list. The Cityzens started the game on the front foot and went ahead within the first minute – Aguero getting on the end of an Aymeric Laporte pass to score. However, Arsenal battled their way back into the game and drew level in the 11th minute through captain Laurent Koscielny. The French centre-back rose highest to head home from a Nacho Monreal cross.

Things became even between both teams in the succeeding minutes, but City went 2-1 up towards the end of the first half, Aguero again getting on the scoresheet. The Argentine striker took advantage of Arsenal’s woeful defending to tap home his second goal of the night.

The Gunners returned for the second half more determined but there was little they could do to stop City’s impressive attack. Despite Arsenal going close a number of times, it was the away side that made the breakthrough to put the game to bed. Unsurprisingly, Aguero was again the scorer as he completed his hat-trick – his tenth in the Premier League.

The 3-1 win keeps City within touching distance of rivals Liverpool. Guardiola’s side are now just two points behind the Reds, who will play on Monday against West Ham United. For Arsenal, though, the loss means they have now dropped to sixth on the Premier League table, following wins for both Chelsea and Manchester United.
