Wayne Rooney scored in both halves as he led Manchester United to a comfortable 4-2 victory over Sami Hyypia’s Bayer Leverkusen at Old Trafford. Robin van Persie and Antonio Valencia also got on the scoresheet in the second half.

In the other Group A match, Alex Teixeira scored twice give Shakhtar Donetsk a 2-0 victory away at Real Sociedad.

In Group B, Real Madrid put six past Galatasaray as Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick to help the Spanish giants to a 6-1 victory in Istanbul. Cristiano Ronaldo is now the 4th highest goal scorer in UEFA Champions League history with 53 goals.

In the other Group B clash, Juventus came from behind to draw 1-1 at FC Copenhagen. Nicolai Jorgensen gave the home side a surprise lead before Fabio Quagliarella scored for a profligate Juventus to give them a point.

Thiago Motta’s brace helped Paris Saint-Germain to a 4-1 victory away at Olympiakos in Group C. Edinson Cavani scored in the first half as the teams went into half-time at 1-1 before Thiago Motta scored twice in five second half minutes to seal victory for PSG.

Elsewhere in Group C, Benfica scored twice in the first half win 2-0 at home against RSC Anderlecht.

In group D, Manchester City scored three goals in ten minutes in the second half to win 3-0 at Viktoria Plzen. Edin Dzeko gave City a 48th minute lead before Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure made sure of the result with goals in the next ten minutes.

Bayern Munich beat CSKA Moscow 3-0 at the Allianz Arena in the other Group D match with David Alaba scoring an excellent free-kick in the third minute.
