Teams which are likely to move to the next round of 2018/19 Champions League

With the draw for UEFA Champions League unveiling, the excitement as to who will reach the next round has already begun. So let's look at each group and the likely teams to move forward.

Group A

  • Atletico Madrid
  • Dortmund
  • Monaco
  • Club Brugge

Group A is a relatively easier group. Atletico Madrid is likely to top the group as they have been playing very well as a team for the last few years, while Dortmund and Monaco are fighting for the second spot. German side Dortmund is still expected to go through to the second round. So I reckon, Atletico and Dortmund will be the two teams going forward.

Group B

  • Barcelona
  • Tottenham Hotspur
  • PSV Eindhoven
  • Inter Milan
Real Valladolid CF v FC Barcelona - La Liga
Messi Playing for Barcelona

Barcelona with all the star players including Messi in their side is expected to top the group. Tottenham is likely to pose them a good challenge. Inter have not been the same side, but still have a good team and likely to give Tottenham a good fight. I don’t expect PSV to make any dent in this group. Hence I expect Barcelona and Tottenham to move forward to the next round.

Group C

  • Paris Saint-Germain
  • Napoli
  • Liverpool
  • Crvena Zvezda
Liverpool v Brighton & Hove Albion - Premier League
Salah playing for Liverpool

This one is probably the toughest group of all. Last year's finalist Liverpool have strengthened their team in the summer and already are playing superb football in the domestic league. PSG have an equally good team with solid attack up front in the form of Neymar and Mbappe. Despite Sarri leaving the club, Napoli have an experienced manager and still an excellent team. So this group will be really fought out with Liverpool and PSG edging over other two teams in the group.

Group D

  • Lokomotiv
  • Porto
  • Schalke
  • Galatasaray
FC Porto v Desportivo das Aves - Portuguese Super Cup
FC Porto is expected to move to the next round

This one the least exciting group for me even though the quality of teams is of the same level. I expect Porto to march forward while German side Schalke is expected to give a good fight to Galatasaray and edge towards next round.

Group E

  • Bayern Munich
  • Benfica
  • Ajax
  • AEK
Real Madrid v Bayern Muenchen - UEFA Champions League Semi Final Second Leg
Bayern - A formidable side

I expect Bayern to move to the next round easily. Greek side AEK will not be making any impact in the group while Benfica and Ajax will fight it out for the second place. While I would personally like to see Ajax move forward, Portuguese side Benfica might edge over Ajax.

Group F

  • Manchester City
  • Shakhtar Donetsk
  • Lyon
  • Hoffenheim
Manchester City FC v VfL Borussia Moenchengladbach - UEFA Champions League
Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero

This one is a straightforward group to me. City have all the talent to top the group easily. French side Lyon is expected to take the second spot as they also have a perfect team. Shakhtar and Hoffenheim will be there hoping to give some fight to Lyon.

This one is not such a difficult group to predict. In spite of Ronaldo leaving the side, the defending champions Real are expected to top the group. They have enough firepower to march through. Roma are also expected to go through as the second team of the group.

Group H

  • Juventus
  • Manchester United
  • Valencia
  • Young Boys
Juventus v SS Lazio - Serie A
Ronaldo playing for Juventus

Well, this one is exciting for two reasons. First, the Italian side Juventus will have the champions league’s top scorer Ronaldo, and they will look forward to replicating their glory days again as they haven’t won the champions league since 1996. Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford to play against his former team will also be quite a sight. Manchester United, on the other hand, will be worried about their recent form in the domestic league. Valencia is a good side too. I expect Juventus to top the group while United to take the second spot.
