Steven Gerrard dispossess Zidane off the ball

Zinedine Zidane has revealed he told Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to sign Steven Gerrard back in 2004.

The Liverpool midfielder, who recently announced his decision to depart his boyhood club at the end of the season this week, was also approached by Chelsea, Manchester United apart from Real Madrid during his 17-year sensational career with the Merseysiders.

“Gerrard was the best in the world”

France legend Zidane said that he tried his best to get Gerrard to swap the red of Liverpool with the white of Madrid, but the Englishman’s loyalty is not something money could buy.

The 42-year-old said, "I have said in the past that at his peak he was the best in the world.

"I think it was the summer of 2004 I was having a conversation with Florentino Perez and I told him I wanted him to partner me in midfield for Madrid.

"I know the club tried twice but he wouldn't leave Liverpool. Not many players turn down Real Madrid, but I think that tells you a lot about the loyalty of the man."

Gerrard confirmed he will join a club in the in the summer and Zidane believes the 34-year-old still has much to offer as a player.

"The years of him winning trophies are not behind him. I am sure he will be very successful in the MLS."
