What's the Story?

The UEFA Team of the year for 2017 is doing the rounds with 11 best players chosen from Europe in their respective positions. On similar lines, the team of the year for one of the most popular PC games ever FIFA is also being voted for by the people for the Ultimate Team of the Year for FIFA 18.

Former Manchester United and England centre-back Rio Ferdinand also made a team of the year of his own and suggested EA Sports follow it for FIFA 18. However, then it was not well received by the game developers.

In case you didn't know...

There were 55 nominees for 11 positions overall set by FIFA 18 in a 4-3-3 formation. The voting was held until 12 January, while the result will be declared on 15 January. This Team of the Year initiative gives FIFA fans a chance to get their hands on limited-edition cards honouring, the standout players from the previous year. The players inducted into the team of the year get very high upgrades on their player cards.

The heart of the matter

The team of the year chosen by Rio Ferdinand has some common players with the UEFA team of the year. However, it has the inclusion of fellow Manchester United player David De Gea in place of Gianluigi Buffon. Here are the 11 players by Rio Ferdinand:

However, EA Sports did not take the self-proclaimed TOTY by Rio well and decided to troll him by the following comment.

Ent
EA Sports troll Rio Ferdinand on his TOTY selection.

The response by EA Sports was received hilariously and liked by most of the fans.

What's next?

Such responses by the creators of the games themselves increase the popularity of their product and help them gather a larger fan base. Ferdinand though did not have any response to the savage comment made by EA Sports and preferred staying quiet. He later posted a picture of himself at the Sheffield United stadium.

Author's take

Picking out 11 best players is always debatable with no two people having exactly the same choices. Thus, the team chosen by Rio Ferdinand had a mixed response by the fans although EA Sports stole the show with their comment. Making your own TOTY is a common practice by players and pundits these days.
