Nintendo has revealed their sales figures for 2014, and by the looks of it they seem to be doing pretty well with their recently released Amiibos turning in a massive profit. However, according to a recent article on Bloomsberg, the company’s profit can mostly be attributed to the sliding Yen, which has helped Nintendo’s overseas earnings by increasing its expected net income.
The article states the company has “halved its operating earnings forecast for this fiscal year to 20 billion yen ($170 million) and lowered its sales outlook by 7 percent Wednesday.” The cuts are probably due to low sales of the Wii U, which hasn’t really done too well though the success of games like Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros have helped increase the consoles sales figures somewhat.
But unlike the Wii U, Nintendo’s new line of Amiibo figures have done incredibly well, selling over 5.7 million figures worldwide. Nintendo launched the Amiibo figures last November and have managed to sell over a million figures in a month. With the next wave of Amiibos set to launch in the coming months, Nintendo can expect some good sales in the near future.
Overall, Nintendo seems to have had a good year and have actually managed to turn a profit after a long while. However, investors aren't too impressed with the company’s performance with many are demanding a new piece of hardware.
According to Tokyo-based analyst, Hideki Yasuda, the best Nintendo can hope for with their Wii U is “keeping the present state of affairs. In the game business, momentum is key. Nintendo should be thinking about new hardware.” Hopefully, the release of the new Nintendo 3DS line will boost the company’s sales in 2015.
