PlanetSide 2

Sony Online’s free-to-play MMOFPS PlanetSide 2 broke the Guinness World Record this weekend for having the most players online in a single first-person shooter (FPS) battle. The game had as many as 1,158 players logged in this past Saturday for a massive battle on the Jaeger competitive server. This included players from all three of the games factions – Vanu Sovereignty, Terran Republic and Conglomerate.

The massive battle event was planned by the game’s fan community PlanetSide Battles along with developers Sony Online Entertainment. The goal was to beat previous record holder Man vs Machine who have held the title since 2012 with 999 players.

The community had initially hoped for 1000 players to join the battle in order to set the new record. But the outcome was better than predicted, with over 1100 players joining the fray. The record was for most simultaneous online players was originally held by PlanetSide, but Man VS Machine broke this in 2012.

The massive record breaking battle had over 53,729 kills, 31 captured bases, 3,822 team kills, and 5,089 destroyed vehicles. The most used weapon was the Orion VS54 light machine gun while the most used vehicle was the Sunderer. You can head over to the PlanetSide Battle website to check out the full details on the battle.

PlanetSide released back in 2012 for the PC and won praise for its support of large scaled multiplayer battles. PlanetSide 2 will now be launching for the PlayStation 4 and is currently in closed beta phase.
